Rolled my tractor....Engine won't turn over!

   / Rolled my tractor....Engine won't turn over! #31
When rolling one over, even onto it's side, if the angle is enough, one's instinct is to try to start it up and see if it' OK.

But one's instinct is wrong. Hard as it may be, leave it sit for 24 hours allowing drainage of fluids and oil back into their pans. Someone can comment on the check list of things to do before even thinking about attempting a restart.

Someone else can comment on this, but somehow we need to disseminate this information broadly. We need to slowly and deliberately go through the engine before attempting to start.

Flopped tractor to-do list
1. Calm down, change underpants

2. With aid from another machine, Upright and move tractor WITHOUT even attempting to start, to level and safe ground

3. Let set for at least overnight before attempt starting

4. After setting for at least 12 hours, make sure nothing is mashed, missing or harpooned into engine or other components or connecting rods sticking out from engine block. Make sure to disengage pto, and place tractor in 'neutral' Try turning over by hand by turning bottom pulley on engine, direction is not important. Fluid levels not important yet

5. If cannot turn one full turn, remove injectors and attempt to turn pulley.

6. If full revolution is made, check engine oil, battery fluid level and hyd-trans fluid levels, top of as required.

7. Replace injectors and start engine.

8. If turns over slow or not at all don't freek, not uncommon for batteries to not be them-selves after loosing fluid being upside down or up on one side and having fluid replaced. replace or 'jump' ailing

9. gotcha' this far something should have safely happend by now:D

I doubt you hydrolocked it. The cooling system is sealed so it would not get into your cylinders anyway unless you broke the head. If you pulled out all of the injectors and actually got into the top of the cylinders and they were bone dry and you didn't find fuel in there then you are probably ok. I am not for sure but some vehicles, not sure about tractors have a low oil kill switch that kills the engine and could need reset. If you shut it off immediately after turning it over I doubt you done any damage to the engine. I will bet you have the engine and hydro tranny still locked together in a bind. Raise the back of your tractor up on jacks stands to get the wheels off the ground and try turning the engine over by hand. It also might help to relieve all the pressure from your hydraulics by cracking some lines. Glad you are ok. Hope this helps and you get your machine going.

Anxiuosly awaiting news of the outcome. I hope it's something relatively minor keeping the engine from starting. We have an L3830HST, same series but different engine, 3 cyl as opposed to 4 cyl. On ours there is a hook you can engage to keep the clutch pedal disenged, which would eliminate any question of trans binding the engine, I'd think. (Though I doubt that's the problem.) I've not had the machine all the way over, but did once, slide down a hill and get stuck with the nose down on such an angle that the loader hydraulics wouldn't work and the HST was whining ominously. After being towed out while using the tractor's power also, let it sit for a while and everything went back to normal.
Hope your engine didn't sustain major damage, but burning up the starter sure isn't a good sign.
Whatever it turns out to be, it'll be good information for me to have in the event I survive a roll.

How did you roll it? There might be a lesson in that story for the rest of us.

So where are we with this situation?

Sorry for not responding...Holidays
Ok to make short and concise.

Took the oil pan off and sure enough a bent piston arm on the # 1 cylinder.
Secondly i need some info on the push rods should they have a bend at the top or should they be straight? all have a bend at the top but some look more or less than others. Looks like the compression might of bent the push rods.
Cylinder and bearing looks good so am I able to replace the piston and piston arm or do a I need to resurface the cylinder chamber?

Sincerely,

Destined to be a Kubota master mechanic...(like it or not)

P.S I'll be ready for the next guy who rolls his 5038

How many hours? If it doesn't have alot of hours, I would just replace the bent, broken items. I'd say you are looking at a complete tear down to make sure you know what components are damaged. Check the valves, push rods, pistons, connecteting rods, everything.

yep, hydro lock. Better mic the crank before you put in new pistons, rods and bearings....... I have seen hydro lock put a nick in the crank and the new setup will be trash in a very short time.

BTDT......... or at lease had a very good seat on the sidelines.

Now you know what not to do when you lay one over.

It doesn't always happen...... guy down the road layed his JD over and he got lucky, he didn't hurt himself OR the tractor. You wanna talk about a dumb bastage though, he was carrying gravel, high up, so he "could see where he was going"!
