For what it is worth my 2 cents are for a "Garn" wood boiler, I did a fair amount of research on this and want to do it myself I just do not have the cash right now. there are videos on you tube about this as well as alot of great reviews.
I would like some feedback on the satisfaction of Greenwood 100 or Seton W-90 hydronic wood furnaces. Our plan is to use our Greenwood hydronic wood boiler and an array of solar panels in a closed loop to provide domestic hot water and both radiant floor and HVAC forced heat via the power of the sun and renewable energy of wood. We purchased our Greenwood 100 during the 2009 engineered financial collapse that put many small businesses out of business, including Greenwood. I admit we did benefit from the price reduction but oppose the repeated robbing of wealth which is documented on Life On The Edge Of A Bubble movie. I believe our hydronic wood furnaces will provide a great benefit as the cost of energy sky rockets. We are still in the building process and anticipate with great enthusiasm the freedom from utility cost.
Sam, I am curious to know how much wood your boiler uses. I have a friend who uses a Garn to heat his house and a separate 1 floor apartment. He's going thru 12 cords for a normal year and expects to go to 16 this year because of the extendeded cold. Thanks
Lou
Lou,
I haven't installed our boiler because we are still building our home but was wondering how others' felt about their boiler installation, operation and performance.
I saw the Garn owner over the weekend. He's not too happy for different reasons. He feels he is a slave to this boiler. He hurt his wrists by splitting so much wood and had to have an operation on one of them. He is a big, strong guy but this is just too much wood to produce by hand per season in my opinion. He is a surgical vet so this operation cut into his business. He is insulating his house which was handed down thru the family and built in the 30's. It had no insulation. When he is done, he hopes to acquire a reduction of 7 cords per year or about a cord every 3 weeks. He developed a routine of stoking the boiler before he leaves for the day and then goes back outside at night to stoke it once more. He spent a goodly sum for it so he is compelled to use it. His house is evenly heated. The Garn he has has a containment of 1500 gals which also provides plenty for dhw.
