I am looking a 1983 F600, 6.1L V8 that the city has for sale. It is a 12' flat bed dully wheel drive. Overall in good shape given the year. It has a GVW rating of 16,500 but I have been unable to find what would be the GCWR? I not sure what the truck weighs but it is pretty big and the deckover bed is made of 2 inch solid wood. Would like to pull a 20ft equipment trailer rated at 16,000LBs. Seem this truck would have to be able to handle 24,000 combined weight? Anyone have an idea of what were the axle rates for this model year or what this truck can pull legally?

I would go have the truck weighed then call you Ford dealer with the VIN# and see what they can find.

I have a feeling its got a 26,000# GCWR since these trucks were made to haul, not tow, and were commonly used by contractors and lumber yards where payload was all that matters.

Tow rating and GCWR doesn't come into play in WI.

Anything over a 9500 pound trailer will put you over 26K GCWR, requiring a CDL.

That truck should handle that better than any pickup, as it has brakes that are twice that of a pickup but will seem slow compared to a pick up when you take off. If wisconsin is like IL to be legal all you have to do is buy plates to cover the weight. And pass inpections. I have seen many of these pulling full size backhoes.

On the sticker by the door the GVR is listed at 16,500lbs with the front axle at 5500, and the rear axle at 11,000LBs. The engine is a 370HP 2V8 with hydraulic's for a plow up front and a hydraulic's RAM for the dump trailer under the bed that is at least 16K. It does not have any hitch on it but this is what I would like to add. If the load is under 26,000 LBs for a combined load I believe no CDL is necessary. I called the local FORD dealer and they could not enter the VIN number in their computer given the age and had no paper details for a 1983. Wasn't able to weigh it but it has to be at least 8,000 lbs or more so I am hoping it would be capable and able to pull a 16K trailer? I have attached two pictures of the back of the truck. Thoughts?

If it is for Commercial use that truck and trailer WILL require a CDL class A. The truck alone would not require anything more than a class D.

I posted the following from a online service. The way I read it is that you are correct that I would need a CDL license (pt-2) for commerical use but most of the heavy trailering will be for private logging. It sure would be nice though to understand the total GCWR load of this truck?

A Wisconsin CDL is required if you operate any of the following CMV's . . .
1. A vehicle with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 lbs.
2. A vehicle towing a unit with a manufacturer's GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs. when the GCWR exceeds 26,000 lbs.
3. A vehicle used to . . .(a.) carry 15 or more passengers (excluding the driver), or (b.) carry (15) or less people (including the driver) when carrying children to or from school and home regularly for compensation.
4. A vehicle carrying hazardous materials in amounts requiring placarding

What do you mean by private logging?

Private for me is logging that I do on our own woodlot (homestead)property. I either sell the sawlogs to a local mill as a landowner or deliever to the pulp mill. It is not an activity that is connected to my commerical business. Sorry for any confusion.
