I have to admit, I hated shopping on the net at first. Most sites were just come ons. That has changed dramaticly as progressive vendors have seen the true sales potential and chance to actually use it to enhance customer service. I still like to sit down face to face when possible but the NET has giving me more information as a consumer not only in price comps but in service issues and features of competitive equipment. I feel much more knowledgable when talking to a dealer about their machines and hence they have to be more knowledgable.

I have read through all the arguing back and forth and it seems that little help has been offered. My best guess at least on new Deere tractors would be about 15 to 20% off with the 0% finance programs still in effect.

duffster, what Dave categorically and unequivocally said is that he cannot be bothered to haggle, to invest time in order to save money-your subsequent posts indicated a tacit agreement-leave emotion out and go back and read what was typed.

Dave, and you, can afford NOT to save money, you both clearly stated as much.

I posted that 'working folk' cannot, this includes myself.

Why you, Mike the moderator, and Dave have gotten your shorts in a twist over this is interesting-30 points and counting.

Make that 55, I think anyway, Mike won't tell me.

You made your point, long ago. How people buy tractors, or any other expensive item, is a matter of personal choice and which approach is best is a matter opinion, not fact. Repeated badgering of those with a different opinion and insulting them by implying they are not 'working people' violates TBN Terms Of Service.

Mike, thank you for finally responding-so in your mind ANYONE that does not invest some time in shopping around, to save 1-3 THOUSAND dollars because they cannot be bothered to do so, is a working person?

And Mike, I think it is fair to say that most people would say that working folk NEED to save every penny they can.

Since I have your attention, do I have 55 points now, or 35?

I ask because I am not certain whether or not the 25 point infraction for the post that I called your attention to-I was certain you had missed it, is included in the tally.

Actually, the "sticker" price is on most websites of the tractor manufacturer. No, there wasn't a sticker on the window on my tractor. Come to think of it, there wasn't a window either. I cried foul!!!

Seriously, the MSRP is readily available and published. I fail to see the beef here. If you suspect a dealer isn't discounting to meet your expectation, then buy from one who meets your expectation. I honestly fail to see the almost anti-dealer attitude that is all too common here in these threads.

Get quotes from various dealers. I did just this week. I got prices that varied greatly. Frankly, if all local dealers are too high priced, they risk me buying a tractor from out of state and using the sales tax saving to pay the shipping cost. It's called a free market.

I apologize for my portion of the bantering. Before being flayed as a spendthrift, I was remarking on how pricing is more difficult than it needs to be in response to a comment about not enjoying haggling.

Your answer is certainly meant to be helpful and it is to an extent. But, 15% to 20% off is a fuzzy answer. Let's say I am looking at a tractor that is in the $40,000 range. 80% of $40K is $32K. 85% of $40K is $34K. A $2000 spread on an item that hypothetically has an average actual sales price of $33K. It's not so good.

Dave.

Understand that the cost of doing business can vary greatly in different locales, in a small town in the southwest I can get 18% off. In the northeast with higher cost rent the dealer may need more to come out.
Also if floorplan is due you may save a little extra buying a stock unit.

The title to the thread was pretty specific though, so I thought I would chime in.

I have purchased many pieces of farm equipment from different dealers over the years. They all will have a different price that is influenced by owner, location, need to move euipment, and your realationship with the dealer. A dedicated customer sometimes gets preference or heads up on any special deals.
I have also have been quoted different prices from different people at the same dealership. I went into a dealership and asked what they were asking for a haybine. The salesman shot me a price and I went to the lot to look it over. The saleman didn't follow me out. The manager pulled up as I was looking at it and I called him over. I asked some questions and what they were asking for it. The price was 20% less than the salesman had just told me!:D The salesman was quite suprised when I walked in with the manager and made the purchase.
I bought a rotary rake from them later on from the salesman who didn't follow me out before. It took a couple of visits and the price came down. He did follow me out to look at it this time. I gave him a sack of sweet corn when he delivered it.
I have learned it doesn't hurt to ask and don't burn any bridges. Buying equipment is definitly an art with a little bit of science. If you plan on making many more purchases or will be needing service, building a relationship can be priceless. Sometimes it is what you get after the big purchase is the real value. I have been in a bind and needed to rent a round baler to get hay up. If they are closed, I can give him a call on his cell and he tells me go pick it up and we will get paper done when you return it. We definitly have a trust relationship. They don't advertise they will rent equipment.

I will finsih with this. It is a Great Country that we have so many tractor choices and so many tractor dealer choices. I will still quote around to see what the market is as everybody should, as it is a good business sense, but I know where I get my value add service from also.

We definitly are blessed with abundence in this country. Enjoy!:D
