Exactly,Good post,as long as the dealers keep pricing the same as it was in the last century, they win. When pricing is brought into the 21st century we all win. What is a fair profit? 2%,5%,10%, 15%, 20%,30%. Some seem to think it is fair for a dealer to make as much as they consider fair. 30% at $30,000.00 is a nice $9000.00 profit. If you are a member in certain groups you can get nice discounts. If you are a member in the AQHA (or some other groups)you can get as much as 23% from John Deere. Here is the site: John Deere Guess what John Deere still makes a profit. I know J.D.takes most of the hit not the dealer, but can you even imagine the mark up on a Deere. I am not upset that groups get discounts. As a member of the Pa. farm bureau I get discounts from both Case International and Chrysler,up to $500.00. I just want you to see that their is a lot of profit in tractors. I owe no dealer anything,I would like to see everyone have a chance to get a good deal. This idea that it is somehow to complicated is just B.S. A car dealer deals with a lot more models and options and some how you can get Consumer Reports to give you an actual number, for any car you want. I would like to see Consumer Reports or some group do the same. Do I not trust a dealer? No offense but no I do not, unless I know him pretty good. If you go to a dealer you have never seen before and trust a price he throughs out,I got some beach front property for sale in Iowa, want some?

Also good points.

Think about how much time has been spent on this post trying to ferret out what a reasonable price is. We could have been talking about the technical merits of the equipment instead.

Still think others aren't wasting your time to their benefit?
Dave.

duffster/nubota, you have the right to waste your money in any way you see fit.
I'll drive about two hours to save a g note.

I do believe, that you two believe, that Messick doesn't know a thing about msrp plus lets keep in mind that tractors from this guy are better than the one I can get for alot less down the road, right?-you know my guy gets only ones that are made on Mondays, no wait, they are really Chinese knockoffs, no-no, gray market, yeah thats the ticket, gray market-I am buying a gray market unit-geeze, you three deserve each other.

How do you figure I am wasting money?

Like I said, if you don't like the price go somewhere else. If you can save money by driving 2 hours then knock yourself out. Why berate Messicks and basically call him a liar?

, trust fund perhaps????

Jealous?

This line of discussion started when I responded to Messick's comment about customers' badgering. Messick may be the best dealer. I have no idea. The real issue is that customers are forced to badger many dealers to get a fair price. Do any of us believe we can walk into the local ___ (insert your choice of colors) dealer and ask for the best price on a tractor that the dealer's first price is the best? If we were always given the best price up front there would be no need for badgering.

When I bought my new tractors I researched the model and brand that fit my situation best. Got three quotes from local dealers. Asked around about dealer service and if they maintained qualified technicians. Picked the dealer I felt most comfortable with and made the purchase. All were within five hundred of each other.
Who really cares what MSRP is ? Bottom line is what comes out of my pocket and if it breaks can they service it properly.

Interesting posts. To me, the bottom line: Knowledge is Power. Do your research first and you won't get skinned. MSRP means nothing to me because in the end it's the market that dictates price in a given area. Most dealers (cars or tractors) sell to their markets or they fold. As a customer, you can travel out of your area in seach of a better market, but then the law of diminishing returns starts to kick in. However, you have the freedom to do whatever you feel is prudent--that's free enterprise at work.
As for haggling--I kind of enjoy it, especially when I know I have the upper hand through knowledge and the word "No". I don't have any animosity toward the sales people who are just trying to get the deal going. It's a give and take process that keeps the mind sharp! A sucker is just someone who never learned to use the word "No" effectively.

I doubt we believe the first is the best. But you know what is funny? If a dealer had a reason to sell a unit and offered a great price just to move it off the lot, it may not even be recognized or accepted as such. What can the dealer say? "This is a really great price, never sold a tractor this low. I really need to get this sale done in this sales quarter". I think I would be looking for the salt shaker as a first reaction. If I were at the beginnning of my quest for a new tractor, I would have no way of knowing the veracity of those statements.

I don't say these these things to bash any particular dealer, just the process. I would call it negotiating or dickering, not badgering.

My sentiments exactly--well stated!

I don't enjoy the haggling and not just because it is a waste of time for me. But 'No' is the powerful word when haggling is required. Or, 'here's my number, call me if you can sell to me for $XXX.'

As to doing the pricing research, that is absolutely necessary. But only because there are no published prices. And you will only get approximately close to actual value due to options, locations, etc. I still say it's somebody else deciding to waste my time. I'm half angry before I open the dealer's door just from resentment. :D

Well Dave I gonna go for another 10 points here:
The mutant topic was whether or not it was worth the effort to save just a few grand by spending -hours- on the phone.
I have to try and save money, you don't, good for you.

No points for you. The topic, as I transmuted it :), is whether I would rather spend hours on the phone or 20 minutes on the web. The system of haggle pricing for tractors is what forces me to spend hours on the phone. If one is not haggling, then one could be working off a fixed price list. The price list could be web published and updated as necessary if the dealer really wants to be competitive on pricing.

If you look at smaller equipment dealer web sites, many are sorry affairs to begin with. Either they don't value the web as a way to reach customers, or don't know how, or believe they can't afford to.

I have no idea how you came by the idea that I fling money around without any need to save. It could be what CurlyDave said, not my words.
Dave.

I go straight to Tractor House to see market pricing on models. It's really the best way IMHO to get market pricing on a specific model or unit. I know that shipping must be calculated in but you can always allow for that in negotiations.
