I have almost 1600 hours on my TC45D and this same problem crops up from time-to-time. It's as if the starter or soleniod stick. I tap on my starter solenoid and it starts okay most of the time. Short of replacing the starter, I don't think I have a good solution. Some say that the stater circuit needs redesigned because there are times the relays/switch do not supply enough voltage to the solenoid. I can't say if this is true because I can't get mine to fail long enough to troubleshoot the problem. After a few retries or tapping the solenoid, mine normally fires right off. It only happens about once every 6 months and seems to happen more when the tractor has been running and is hot. I don't think I've ever had it happen when the tractor is cold.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. It's a frustrating problem and one shared by many of us with these and similar tractors.

Welcome to TBN.

Are you familiar with the use of a remote starter switch? It's a switch that mechanics sometimes use so they can energize the starter while working under the hood of an automobile. Mine is a button type switch with two leads ending in alligator clips. I clip one lead to the positive lead at the starter and the other to the solenoid. Press the button and it's as direct a connection as you can get. With the key on or off, the starter will engage, but the engine won't start unless the key is on and all the other interlocks are closed. This setup can be used effectively for troubleshooting.

Unfortunately, in today's lingo, a remote starter switch means a wireless remote starter switch. I tried searching and it didn't turn up what I wanted. I have seen them in stores such as Pep Boys and NAPA, but I don't know what they are calling them now.

My TC29 did this a couple of times, so I removed starter and disassembled it, cleaned it (very dirty) and no problems since.

I've read where some people pull the solenoid energize wire and instead use it to energize a simple 30a fog lamp relay, and use that relay to switch from battery to solenoid energize.. that way there are no safety switches in the line powering the solenoid.. the fog lamp relay takes very little power.. so drops from safety switches don't effect it like the solenoids more power hungry coil may be effected by multiple switch resistance in the line.

I noticed on my TC40D back when it was new (hard to believe that was about 9 years ago) that the red-colored protective rubber cap on the positive terminal of the starter solenoid would hold water in and around the screw/stud and terminal at the starter. I can't recall exactly, but I seem to remember drilling or cutting a little of the rubber away so it would drain, but also cleaning the teminal and stud and applying some anti-corrosion lube.
