burning the center out of a tree

"Amish kids are only required to finish 8th grade. When they graduate, they have excellent
reading, writing, and math skills including Pythagorean theorem." But can they pass the no child left behind test. Or are they tested on different standards? If the standards are different then its not apples to apples.

do they have tv? internet? ipods? computers? hummm nothing but school to focus on. I wonder if that would have an effect on children? How many Amish kids in a class? 30+?
How many Amish kids that dont speak english? How many that come from broken homes, abused, have not eaten all day? How many of their parents are involved in their education? Is education valued in their homes, do they stay up all night playing video games? A lot of other factors then just throwing down "Teaching is no longer a career
or calling. Teachers are now nothing more than unionized government bureaucrats. "

" There are
exceptions, I do know a few good ones. "

I can say the same about every profession, the only difference is that just about everyone will have a teacher for 13 years, everyone will have a history with education. You may have issues with school or teachers but you have had 13 years (k-12) of experience with them. Try seeing a doctor every day for 13 years, when you see the amount of paper work they do and send in you can say they are government bureaucrats also.

Its a pretty broad brush you paint with, sometimes it paints others into corners. I appoligize if i went off on a rant.

If I'm understanding correctly, it's easily done.

Drill a hole through the length of the log. This is easy to do with an old square
shank auger bit or expansion bit. Extend the bit with a bit extension or joint of pipe.

Torch the hole until it begins to burn.

Use a leaf blower to blow the fire through the hole.

Unless the log is very wet, it will quickly burn through, and the hole will expand uniformly.
Swap ends with the blower to avoid a funnel-shaped hole.

Amish kids are only required to finish 8th grade. When they graduate, they have excellent
reading, writing, and math skills including Pythagorean theorem. I blame the current generation
of poorly educated kids on the teachers and the government. Teaching is no longer a career
or calling. Teachers are now nothing more than unionized government bureaucrats. There are
exceptions, I do know a few good ones.

i like this idea i think we will try something like this, and i know that ceder is one of the few trees to burn well while green. In a survial situation it is a good place to find dry tinder but thats a little of topic

If you use a propane roofing torch (also called a weed burner) the leaf blower will not be required. The blast effect of the torch through the hole will burn the sides uniformly and the flame will travel the six or eight feet of the log -- no problem. I think it will be much easier than trying to get a fire going at one end and then trying to blow it along with the leaf blower:eek::eek: JMHO

it was unintentional and already hollow inside.

quite easy as some embers from the house fire caught the dead center on fire

Be aware that the lead screw on an auger bit does not bite into the end grain of wood as well as it does cross-grain. A Forstner bit with pressure applied might be a good choice for this process. Then apply the flame as suggested.

Many years ago when water pipes were made by boring out the center of logs they used a spoon bit on the end of a large shaft (e.g. @ 1 inch diameter) and bored a 5-6 inch hole through 10 feet of log (elm or pine usually).

GWJD, your more recent posts are greatly improved, showing that you understand that good grammar, spelling and punctuation do exist. Congratulations. As beenthere said, keep in mind that your writing and speaking skills give first impressions, and that will be important to your success. Best wishes on completing your formal education and subsequently communicating the results of that education, both in person and in writing, to everyone at work and in your personal life.

I think you have several wood burning techniques that will work... why not try several different ones and post back which one works best, along with your observations. A pyrotechnical report, if you will.:)

And whatever you do... post pictures. There are plenty of visual learners out there. Besides, it'll be good to see your practical engineering side.

My dad used the saltpeter trick on old wood stumps, but it would burn the whole stump to fine ash.

We all love a good fire here at TBN. Just don't burn the tractor!
All these giant propane torches and leafblower setups make me think of one more thing: make sure you've got some way of putting the darn thing out!

well we went out and removed a 18" - 6' stump new location no tractor so we used tow straps and a come along. it was a long slow day but it is out of the ground and ready to be burned.

the plan is to go back out this weekend and drill and burn the center goning to use a 1"x3' wood auger drilling 7 holes working from each end.

we are geting some heavy frost this week. so we are going to haul it out with a four wheeler or a truck

we took some pics of the exstraction i do not have them but i will take more and post what i can.

40 Posts! For burning out the center of a cedar tree, complete with resume writing and grammar lessons, with a disertation on Amish study? That has to be a record, of some sort! But I'm curious, The final product is to be used for: 1) An 'Art' piece? 2) 18" x 6', Cedar Jack-O-Lantern? Does this have anything to do with your course of study, or just a 'fun' thing? Seems like hand digging and hauling a log of that size, doesn't have a very large 'fun' quotient! Any beer or gals involved? :)~Scotty
