Dead Walnut tree worth Milling?

It is rather nasty stuff chemically. It scares me how many millions of gallons are getting put into the soil, and eventually into the water. Of course this is only my opinion so don't sue me big M.

Thanks for all the great response, Try to answer some of the questions:
1. Not talking to the neighbor anymore.So can't ask him about the Roundup(Long story, but caught him misappropriating funds from a charity that my wife used to run)
2. I like the idea of maybe giving it to Palomar. I have seen some of their work at the San Diego Co. fair,very nice stuff
3. I,m thinking maybe I could some ANFO to remove it, which is about 100ft from and lower than the neighbors house. Just kidding.

The neighbor sounds like a real gem......the ANFO may not be THAT unreasonable ( Just kidding too...hehe)

I don't think roundup would kill any large tree without using gallons of it. I usually have to spray multiple times to kill poison ivy. Elm trees are dying everywhere on their own. I have one or two or more a year that die, some old, some young.

I just went to Roundup's site and tried to copy and paste the label information but couldn't do it without "select all text" so I'll write the portion of the label pertaining to precautions that I should have read before letting my wife soak the tree and vines with it.

"AVOID CONTACT OF HERBICIDE (Roundup) WITH FOLIAGE, GREEN STEMS, NON-WOODY ROOTS, OR FRUIT OF CROPS, DESIRABLE PLANTS AND TREES BECAUSE SEVERE INJURY OR DESTRUCTION IS LIKELY TO RESULT". ( capital letters are theirs)

Google "claro walnut" and check the pricing on the undesiarable west coast trees. The reason that orchard trees don't tend to become lumber is that they are usually to small and they are not encouraged to grow a single tall trunk. One thing they are after when ripping out orchards is the burls which can bring top dollar

Tom, that is a very nice job of bookending on the doors.
The Central Valley mature walnuts that are torn out are generally about 14" to 18" in diameter and have the first set of limbs just above the tractor operator's head height. These trees have about 6" to 10" of dark wood at the base and being that close to (bullet) heart center don't offer a lot of good useable off center cants.

I,ve got a walnut tree that died a year or two ago( i think thanks to my neighbor who has an undue fondness for Roundup) Any way it's not that tall, maybe 20 ft, the trunk is about 30-35 inches in diameter? Should I just dig it out, or is there something more useful that should explore? I don't know the variety, but it did produce a green walnut that I made some Italian liquor out of(Nocino?)Any ideas welcomed, including curse's ,hex's , bad karma, that I can use on my neighbor

I browsed through the responses but I don't think I saw the most important question. Is the tree anywhere near a house or fence line? If so, a miller won't touch it. Every nail, wire or other piece of metal entrapped in the wood will mess up their blade.

Ok i see your yall are saddend by your tree loss both OP and the guy whos wife likes Glycosulfate. BAckground on me I am currently a forester who has post bachlor education. I do not have my herbicide licence but oversee several spraying contracts in my few years of limited exp. as well as use a lot of round up. Glycosulfate (sp?) is the active ingrediant in roundup all the gerenerics of it, not 24D but roundup. It is also active ingrediant in forestry herbicides just at a different concentration in chopper and accord cant remember is there 3m or BASF? So how it works There are 2 types soil born and foliar herbicides roundup is the latter meaning that once into the soil it breaks down into a harmless crstalized for that is absorbed it cannot kill vegitation if poured into the dirt only from the aspect that it will soak into new roots and you would have to like pour the undiluted stuff or gallons on large diameter trees to kill them. You have to hack into woody bark to get it into the cambium layer to get the treee to take it up and it still does not work well in the roundup concentration Chopper and Accord which are like 16% active is a different stroy. Like poated it will work through green twigs and fresh nonwoody roots as they are the same material as the twigs just under the soil. I agree unless the neighbor was on his latter spraying into the wind over several large applications or on a bucket truck (maye not you tree you say was only a 20 foot trunk so whole tree might have been 45 feet tall or so?) i doubt he killed it, he may not have helped it but i think there were other contributing factors. You can spray roundup all day long at the base of trees and kill the grass around them so you dont have to weedeat i do it and so do landscapers and others ever see a planted tree with dead grass around it every year? You can prep your garden with it spray the grass and its ready to be planted with tender young veggies in like 5-10 days cant remember what label says, although there still may be residue on grass that can be rehydrated in the dew or rain that if it touches your plants can kill. Jus t wanted to clear things up about roundup.

good to know these things about Roundup My Maw-in-law uses this stuff all the time around all of the fruit bushes ( Blueberry ) figs etc, I always told her I would weed eat with my trimmer instead, I was afraid would make the fruit toxic, she must have known better I hope she doesn't read this I'll deny I said it
