after cutting I treat the stump with Tordon. Years ago I trimmed a russian olive branch and applied Tordon to it and it killed the whole tree. remined me of agent orange. russ

If it killed the poison ivy it was almost certainly the "brush killer" variant of Roundup that contains triclopyr as well as glyphosate. Regular Roundup doesn't do much against poison ivy. The brush killer will kill trees.

Ok i see your yall are saddend by your tree loss both OP and the guy whos wife likes Glycosulfate. BAckground on me I am currently a forester who has post bachlor education. I do not have my herbicide licence but oversee several spraying contracts in my few years of limited exp. as well as use a lot of round up. Glycosulfate (sp?) is the active ingrediant in roundup all the gerenerics of it, not 24D but roundup. It is also active ingrediant in forestry herbicides just at a different concentration in chopper and accord cant remember is there 3m or BASF? So how it works There are 2 types soil born and foliar herbicides roundup is the latter meaning that once into the soil it breaks down into a harmless crstalized for that is absorbed it cannot kill vegitation if poured into the dirt only from the aspect that it will soak into new roots and you would have to like pour the undiluted stuff or gallons on large diameter trees to kill them. You have to hack into woody bark to get it into the cambium layer to get the treee to take it up and it still does not work well in the roundup concentration Chopper and Accord which are like 16% active is a different stroy. Like poated it will work through green twigs and fresh nonwoody roots as they are the same material as the twigs just under the soil. I agree unless the neighbor was on his latter spraying into the wind over several large applications or on a bucket truck (maye not you tree you say was only a 20 foot trunk so whole tree might have been 45 feet tall or so?) i doubt he killed it, he may not have helped it but i think there were other contributing factors. You can spray roundup all day long at the base of trees and kill the grass around them so you dont have to weedeat i do it and so do landscapers and others ever see a planted tree with dead grass around it every year? You can prep your garden with it spray the grass and its ready to be planted with tender young veggies in like 5-10 days cant remember what label says, although there still may be residue on grass that can be rehydrated in the dew or rain that if it touches your plants can kill. Jus t wanted to clear things up about roundup.

For what it is worth I just cut a tree about the same size as what you are describing. I thought it was really nice and clean but the mill said it was only worth about $35 because the price of walnut has tanked.. I had them cut it into boards and I am now having them dried and cut into lumber for a home project. About the only thing worth any money is veneer and I don't know how perfect a tree has to be to qualify. Mill it and make something then it is worth everything!

I,ve got a walnut tree that died a year or two ago( i think thanks to my neighbor who has an undue fondness for Roundup) Any way it's not that tall, maybe 20 ft, the trunk is about 30-35 inches in diameter? Should I just dig it out, or is there something more useful that should explore? I don't know the variety, but it did produce a green walnut that I made some Italian liquor out of(Nocino?)Any ideas welcomed, including curse's ,hex's , bad karma, that I can use on my neighbor

If you own a tractor you probably own or need a chainsaw. From a decent sized chainsaw to moderate lumber is an easy step.
Google Alaskan Mark III, buy one from Bailey's ($200) and the next time a tree comes down cut it like a bureaucrat does red tape - lengthwise.

yes both my BS and MFR (masters of forest Resources are from clemson. Clemsonfor is short for clemson forestry. I still dont think brush killer would kill trees unless applied to a wound, but not experienced with it i buy the generic stuff and mix it at the brush and tough weed rate (all thats in it is glycosulfate active) and it will kill poison ivy no problem, sometimes a second application is neccessary but not normally. I would not hesitate to use roundup to prep a garden according to the label after all its labeled for vegtible use so it has been tested by feds for garden application and approved, this is of course at the labeled rate as far as strength and application rate.

I would not drink the stuff myself, never the concentrate but also doubt that it will kill a man in the diluted state, we are not plants.

Tordon is nasty stuff thats what is used in hack-inject methods with hypo-hatches and jim-jims tree injectors, or the poor man method of a machete or hatchet make like one hack per like 6'' of diameter or something and one squirt from a spray bottle (think windex bottle) or a paint brush dipped in a cup and it will kill the biggest tree.

Like the active ingrediant sounds i think its salt based, casue for the next several days after application untill it rains i have to keep the dog out of it she loves to lick the leaves they must be salty, she can smell it and if not watched will be in there licking? She has never shown ill effects from it but it is always dried when she does it so cant get to much i guess, but im sure its not good for kidneys, still wondering about that salesman?
