Fire Extinguisher Mounting

The one pictured is on the rear fender of my New Holland TC40 and I have another one on the bottom half of the ROPS. The third is mounted on the gooseneck trailer and the fourth is in the truck cab. The hard part of this is to remember to keep them all charge updated.
The U.S. Navy really beat fire protection into my head.

dont forget to do a monthly inspection on those extinguishers to check for pressure, hose cleanliness and rust on any pressure part. I would do the upside down shake, rattle and roll at least every month also. At the office we send them in for service every 12 months (we have the CO2 cartridge type ) and the service tech takes all the powder out and replaces it, checks the co2 cartridge and then recertifies it with a new sticker. I dont think the powder would be good for that long on a tractor without settling and compacting. I dont have one on my tractor, but I think I will get one for it. Maybe a nice CO2 type. NO powder settling problem with that. Having seen many powder extinguishers used to try to put out a paper fire, I would not trust them to put out burning leaves either. I watched a guy use up a 20lb. ABC powder type on some burning burlap bags and the fire never was put out. The bags were on some grating so it just kept feeding the oxygen to it. A good CO2 would have snuffed it completely.

What's the maintenance schedule for CO2 type? Having moved here without fire or water protection, we had about 6 powder type. I thought buying them was enough. Certainly couldn't afford to have an annual inspection/recharge. 30 years later, we now have water and fire svc.

Something to think of, because some manufacturers put batteries in the tractors in weird locations. Do NOT put the extinguisher close to the battery.

Boat companies love to put the extinguishers right next to the battery. The problem is, when the battery explodes, you have to reach through the fire to get to the extinguisher

In case you think Haymaker's post is one in a million, it happened to me too. My shirt turned out not to make a very good fire extinguisher. I now have a proper extinguisher mounted on my new tractor, ranger, truck, in the shop, kitchen..

Ed1C - what lit yours up? Quite a loss! Funny (OK, not funny) how the paint is still on the bucket and rear tires hold air - someone hose this down? Sorry for the loss.

Jim, as best I can tell it was mice. Apparently they had built a nest on the muffler under the hood and after an hour of cutting and with a light wind behind me, the nest caught fire. I smelled something was too hot, found the flames and tried to choke the air off with my shirt, but it was already too hot. The plastic wires and hoses added fuel and the wind kept gusting. It was fully engulfed in about a minute. If it wasn't a nest, it may have been chewed wires. There are tons of them behind the gauges.

The tires were filled with water and the wind was from the back to the front, so the 3 point and thankfully my cutter were fine. The VFD arrived 7 minutes after I called them. I had my wife meet them at the county road turn off, and I met them at the gate, so it got doused pretty fast. A few more minutes and the wind would have spread the fire who knows how far.

Fortunately I had insurance, but I'll never be without a fire extinguisher again.

I had a mouse nest catch fire on a JD 12hp riding mower once. It never occurred to me to mount an extinguisher on a tractor though. Great tip. I know what I'm going to do next weekend.

Thankfully not my machine. Just something I drove by as a field ornament for about a month.

My sales rep said someone bought that machine as salvage from the insurance and is rebuilding it.
