I've had a few trailers over the years, my mustang trailer was a factory built car hauler 18' and weigh 2000 lbs. I only received a Coo on it when bought new in '91 when I went to get the 1st tag for it I wasn't advised in need of getting a title, and all I ever had to do was renew the tag every year,
when I sold it back in 2008 the buyer insist I should have a title and if not! that I would need to apply for one and then transfer the title over to him,
I ask him how long he lived in Ga.? "replied 10 years" and always had tilte for his trailers, I then told him all I needed to give him was a BOS and along with the C.o.o and Vin# for him to take to the DMV ( tag office ) and they would issue him a tag plain and simple, He went ahead and bought it but still doubting my word, still thinking he should receive a title and if so we would have to work on getting one.....
but after he went to the DMV and found out he called me the next day telling me that I was correct, and told me that all the trailers he had dealt with in the past were heavier and exceed the 2000 lbs weight reason he thought he had to have a title, and he didn't know about the under 2001 lbs. trailers being exempt from need of a title,..........
But of course this last law they pass may have change that as well.. I haven't heard, and Yes as Carey stated here in GA. when you buy a tag that tag is registered to you, and will stay with you. You will need transfered it time you sale/buy or trade your car?trailer ,in other words the Tag stays in the possession of the one who purchased the tag, and not to be given with the sale of the car/trailer, I think you have 30 days to transfer to the next car/trailer??? although its best to transfer them right away..
you should not run a tag on a car unless it has been transfered to that car. if your caught not having transfered registration and simply installing the tag on the car then a good stiff fine is imposed,
