Do 30 year old tractors have titles?

/ Do 30 year old tractors have titles? #11
I've had a few trailers over the years, my mustang trailer was a factory built car hauler 18' and weigh 2000 lbs. I only received a Coo on it when bought new in '91 when I went to get the 1st tag for it I wasn't advised in need of getting a title, and all I ever had to do was renew the tag every year,
when I sold it back in 2008 the buyer insist I should have a title and if not! that I would need to apply for one and then transfer the title over to him,
I ask him how long he lived in Ga.? "replied 10 years" and always had tilte for his trailers, I then told him all I needed to give him was a BOS and along with the C.o.o and Vin# for him to take to the DMV ( tag office ) and they would issue him a tag plain and simple, He went ahead and bought it but still doubting my word, still thinking he should receive a title and if so we would have to work on getting one.....
but after he went to the DMV and found out he called me the next day telling me that I was correct, and told me that all the trailers he had dealt with in the past were heavier and exceed the 2000 lbs weight reason he thought he had to have a title, and he didn't know about the under 2001 lbs. trailers being exempt from need of a title,..........
But of course this last law they pass may have change that as well.. I haven't heard, and Yes as Carey stated here in GA. when you buy a tag that tag is registered to you, and will stay with you. You will need transfered it time you sale/buy or trade your car?trailer ,in other words the Tag stays in the possession of the one who purchased the tag, and not to be given with the sale of the car/trailer, I think you have 30 days to transfer to the next car/trailer??? although its best to transfer them right away..
you should not run a tag on a car unless it has been transfered to that car. if your caught not having transfered registration and simply installing the tag on the car then a good stiff fine is imposed,

Going to see trailer and equipment in Duluth GA. Anyone know if I should be trailering back to NC with no tag? Should I try to get seller's tag and mail it back? Going through GA, SC, and NC. Thanks to all!

Duluth Ga. is Right in between me and DeepNDirt:D. I believe in Ga. a bill of sale for a short period of time. If it was me RON and I was going through that many states I would call the county were you purchased it and see what they say you may need to do. Might want to see if better you take care of anything while your down here. The city of Duluth, is in Gwinnett County, Ga. search it to get thier DMV Ph.#. I believe your going to be just about a couple of miles from it in Which I believe will be Lawrenceville,Ga.. Don't hold me to that but worth checkin out. But Just remember you may be dealing with the State of Ga.

Many of these businesses have ( Dealer tags) nothing more than paper or plastic tags, they will write on the tag a 30 day expiration date and you are permitted to use for up to the 30 days, Just keep your BOS handy this will provide the date of purchase and allow any cops that might pull you over to see, if this is an individual sale, then you might consider keeping the tag and mailing it back as you mentioned, just for the sake of not being stopped and hassled, It has been a big deal over the past many years here between us 5 states, Ga./S.C./N.C/Tenn./Alabama
stolen trailers and heavy equipment have been turned up in these states, So the law tends to look out for suspicious things like "No Tags" and trailer without Vin#

Thanks for all the info. I am more comfortable with the idea of using his tag and returning it if possible, but we'll see. I'm actually pretty nervous about the deal. Like I said, I'm trading a real nice "turn key and ride" Honda motorcycle for a tractor that may or may not have serious issues. Any advice on what to look for? Tools to bring? Anyone in GA feel like previewing a tractor on Sunday with me? ;)

where in Ga. is this tractor? is it for sale on any local ad sites or how did you find out about it?

...Honda motorcycle for a tractor ...
I saw your ad on Craig's list :D A VTX??? Tells us what you know so far about the tractor... If you think it's a really nice tractor... I would worry about it being stolen. I would get the seller's Driver's License information...

A friend bought a tractor / trailer from out of state a couple of months ago, he still drives around without a tag... so I would not worry about the tag as long as you have a Bill of Sale.

like i said in my post SC does not require a plate on a trailer. So it dosent matter if you just bought it or had it for years here you dont need a tag. Now if its your trailer and your a GA resident and the officer asks and you say its your trailor without your required GA tag, not sure if that is ticketable, or like if NC requires one and you dont have one driving through SC? I have hauled a 4x8 trailer all across this state no tag dont need one, never been stopped, also none of my boat trailers are tagged nor is my 16 ft tandem car hauler trailer, again they do not need to be tagged by residents here in SC.

Thanks for all the help so far guys. Tractor is listed on Tallahassee FL craigslist for $5500 - all implements included. Tractor appears to have several problems thanks to the expert eyes of all of you at TBN. Steering rod/linkage, hub possibly locking up, 4wd selector is down too far to floorboard, loader controls are mounted incorrectly, no decompression spring/bracket, no muffler, and front tires are on wrong sides. I am trading motorcycle straight up for all. Seller says tractor is in FL, but I am unsure of it's exact location. Seller says it's on his old neighbor's property as he has just moved (reason for selling). 150hrs since reconditioned. Now I am leaning away from deal, which is disappointing because I was hopeful. Supposed to meet in Duluth GA this Sunday to swap. Seller said his truck broke down and would have to borrow his friends and all would be loaded on trailer making it hard to get tractor off to drive. I told him I would not buy without close inspection and test drive. Any more help?
