Do 30 year old tractors have titles?

/ Do 30 year old tractors have titles? #21
Thanks for all the help so far guys. Tractor is listed on Tallahassee FL craigslist for $5500 - all implements included. Tractor appears to have several problems thanks to the expert eyes of all of you at TBN. Steering rod/linkage, hub possibly locking up, 4wd selector is down too far to floorboard, loader controls are mounted incorrectly, no decompression spring/bracket, no muffler, and front tires are on wrong sides. I am trading motorcycle straight up for all. Seller says tractor is in FL, but I am unsure of it's exact location. Seller says it's on his old neighbor's property as he has just moved (reason for selling). 150hrs since reconditioned. Now I am leaning away from deal, which is disappointing because I was hopeful. Supposed to meet in Duluth GA this Sunday to swap. Seller said his truck broke down and would have to borrow his friends and all would be loaded on trailer making it hard to get tractor off to drive. I told him I would not buy without close inspection and test drive. Any more help?

Just 2 cents from another GA member .... you may want to look elsewhere.... even getting the driver lincense here would be of limited use.

Good luck!

I would say this is evolving into an epic mess.

I would walk if I were you.

I would scrap the deal and move on, to much hassle and there are to many RELIABLE resources for obtaining a Yanmar. You just said 150hrs since a recondition, meaning its probably a VN recon, and if you have done any reading on this forum you know the REP these machines have.

Not to mention the $5,500 price tag, which in my opinion is way to much for a dinky 1510...

Pass on it..

It is hard to say whether or not this is a good deal. The fact that you are trading a motorcycle for the tractor complicates things. But one of the things that would concern me the most would be the 5 hour drive just to take a look at it. After driving 5 hours, and of course the seller is doing the same, you will both feel a certain amount of pressure to complete the deal. After spending so much time and certain amount of expense just getting there, the urge to get something for the effort will be pretty great. At that point would you be able to just walk away empty handed?

Just got an e-mail and phone call from seller. He assured me tractor has been in tallahasse since he has owned it. 4wd lever was shortened and repositioned because when he put the new steering rod on the lever got in the way. 4wd works but he engages it now with his foot (sounds strange but nothing I assume I couldn't change back with a correct steering arm.) He says the parts manual is for a 86D (186D?) - maybe if the hubs are different, the steering rod is too. Steering jerk started happening about 6 months ago and happens often. He has not run it much since then and has not taken it to anyone to try and fix. Muffler I can fix. Loader controls he sent another pic and I'm really not sure what I am looking at to tell what's not mounted right. Decompression spring etc I can fix. Atlanta is a long haul and tractor sounds as if it needs work. Trading for the bike does make it a unique deal (I can't get a tractor without selling bike first). Book on bike is $5200 retail so I'm not sure how far that will get anyway. I like the idea of walking away if something screams at me, but if I make the trip, I intend on coming back with a tractor. I just don't need another birdbath in the yard!

for the trade or the amount of trade I would not want to fix anything more then airing up a tire, what size is your cycle 1300cc or 1800cc ? and what year? looks like 06-08 you may have already said but I haven't read back through every post, but the 1300 is worth rough 5-K and the 1800 worth roughly 7500 I would ask some these pro's here what would be the value range in the tractor you are talking about, then start adding cost of repairs?
I think 5-k to 7500 should buy you a good tractor without need of any repairs, the FEL are quite expensive and can run the value of a tractor up by 2500-3-k
for the distance you are having to travel I would have request much better and more detailed picture of the tractor, perhaps a video and sound how watching for excessive smoke, etc, etc, its really not too late to request one..

Look at it from a worst case scenario. If something goes wrong what are the chances of getting all or most of your money back? You would need to look at your local craigslist to see what the trailer, finish mower, box blade and rake would sell for used. The loader you could sell but the market for such an item would not be very big. They cost about $3000 new so you might want to figure $2000 or maybe $2500 selling it used.

Once all that is figured you will know basically what you are paying for the tractor by itself. My guess is that you could recover your costs by parting it out but that would be a lot of work and would take quite a bit of time.

I bought my tractor with a couple of implements but if you sutract what they could be sold for I paid about $1800-$2000 for my tractor by itself. It had no major issues. I spent about $200 in fluids, filters, sway chains and overrun clutch then put her to work.

If it was me, I would probably sell the motorcycle and then look for a tractor. Having money in hand gives you more options.

It might still be a good deal as it does have lots of extras--box blade, rake, mower, loader It also has lots of problems. It probably would be a fair deal, but I am not sure it is a good first tractor. LMTC has a 2 wd 1510 with tiller and ROPS with UDTA certification for $4300 that is without other implements and no loader, but with a 6 month parts and labor warranty. That would be a MUCH better first tractor. And Ohio is probably not much farther from NC than is FL. For someone who has the flexibility to run a risk, and was knowledgeable of Yanmars, then this may be an acceptable deal. But I am nervous of this thing.
