Ford Jubilee Leaded vs Unleaded

The lead is there to help with the valves, burning unleaded may burn them out? I used the lead additive some when I had old machines. I also used 2 stroke engine oil mixed at a small amount liked that better.

Pure BS...

tetra ethyl lead was not a valve lube.. it was a spark knock addative.. IE>. it raised the octane.

them fords left the factory with hardened exhaust valve seats.

Thanks, I'll just use unleaded. Ill keep you ninformed on how the restoration is going. Right now I'm trying to find a serial # or something to find out what I got. Paperwork says Ford Golden Jubilee Tractor. Hope after a good cleanup I can find some numbers.:

The sn on an early NAA will be on the left side of the block, forward.. the sn on the rest of the units was on an angled boss ont he trans bellhousing aft of the starter.

if you are particularly lucky, and have the engine off a late unit, and the trans off an ealy one.. it will have no numbers :).. then then you will need to go by casting dates.

Year Starting Serial Number
1952 1
1953 2380
1954 77475

while 53 was fords aniversery and those were the jubilee NAA's.. the 52 and 54 models are actually more rare.... less made in those years...

Interesting, one of ours is a 54; we thought the 53 was more rare.

52 is the rarest.. saw the least made.. 53 saw the most produced.. 54 ended the series as ford started tooling up for the 00 series for the 55 year model. Thus a plain 'NAA' is more rare than a NAA dubbed a jubilee....

Allready been answered, my statement was just a general observation of any old engine. Didn't mean to step on toe's :)

It's not a general observstion.. it's 100% myth.. tel was not added as a valve lube.. it was anti-ping / spark knock preventative.. IE.. octane modifier... don't matter if you had hard valve seats or not...

One can certainly understand the "confusion".

"A side effect of the lead additives was protection of the valve seats from erosion. Many classic cars' engines have needed modification to use lead-free fuels since leaded fuels became unavailable. However, "Lead substitute" products are also produced and can sometimes be found at auto parts stores. These were scientifically tested and some were approved by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs at the UK's Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) in 1999."

In my old Allis Chalmers manual{1948} it said the lead was used for valve seating, nothing about knock. I no longer have the machine nor the manual sold them to a guy in VT. :)

It's wiki.. but here's a good explanation of TEL, ping/spark knock, octane and hard valve seats.

That is where I got the quote I posted. I am not a real big fan of Wiki, but use it sometimes and have found some good information and a good starting point for further investigation.

My brother has been a mechanic for over forty years and he is the one who brought up the issue of using additives when we could no longer get leaded fuel for our NAA and 600 Series tractors.
