Can I trailer this tractor

All that will tell you is how much weigh you can put in the bed, cab, or hitch. Say it has a 8,800# GVWR and the truck weighs 6,800# well that leaves you with 2,000#

I have seen 4x4 F-350's with GVWR as low 9,900# while mine has 11,500#. Big difference when one truck that looks identical to mine can only carry 2,300# while mine can carry 3,900#.

You need to look at the tires size, gear ratio, tranny type, bed length, cab style, 4x4 option, ect. Tow packages and snow plow prep can also up the tow rating. Do not listen to the dealer, they know very little. Do your homework.

Make sure when you look at that Diesel Truck you do your homework. I see quite a few that will tow not much more than your 6.0 I like the Ford SRW F-350 with the Diesel but you must be careful because with the 4 different gearing options, bed lengths, cab options, and 8 or so suspension packages its tow rating can vary 5,000# or so. What I am saying is just because it says F-350 or what ever on the side does not mean squat.

Chris,just to clarify,the f350srw diesel since 99 doesnt have a gear ratio option...3.73 only until the newest 2010 trucks. Only way to get 4.10 or 4.30 is drw,and tow boss packages...IMO,for personal use,none of that matters much,what matters is the door tags GAWR for front and reat axles,do not exceed the GAWR ,and you will be fine....
Same with the GM 6.0 trucks,so many options,and configs,but in the end all that matters is you are under the GAWR on all axles on the truck,the truck has rims,and tires rated to carry the max GAWR,and the same is true on the trailer...then you want your registered weight to be high enough to cover the highest weight the axles will see,but no higher than the combined total of the axles.
Max tow ratings are manufacturers recommedations,they are not enforceable by DOT,only for warranty purposes.....one of my dads good freinds has been towing a 53ft 3 car gooseneck with Dodge trucks since 1995.He runs each truck 300,000-350K miles or so,and gets a new one,that is about 3 years for him.His first 2 trucks were 3500 DRW Cummins dodges with 11,000 GVWR,and a factory 16,000 GCWR! They were autos with 3.55 gears. He tows every single day of the week,up to 25,000lbs behind these trucks,with a total weight of 36,000 combined,runs thru every scale ,and is DOT compliant.All of his trucks have given him perfect service,he hasnt had any issues,and is fully legal at over 2x the recommended GCWR.The 99 he had lost a trans about a week before he was to get his new truck,he had 320,000 some miles on it....thats about it for anything big happening.....he runs 65mph down I95 with these rigs....

You are right. I was not clear. I was just saying because it may be a 1 ton truck you need to check things like gear ratios, axles, bed config, cab config, GVWR, axles, ect.

I was trying to say some combos will only tow what his gas 6.0 does while others will tow twice as much on paper.

Good replies....I keep learning more about tow ratings every time I come to this forum....good stuff.....So to make sure I understand what your saying that if my 2500 chevy GAWRF is 4100 and my GAWRR is 6000 and my Gooseneck trailer has two 7k axles with 14 k capacity then I could pull through the dot scales with a total combined weight of 24,100lbs and be perfectly legal per dot as long as I didn't exceed the weight per axle. I know this would be very hard on my truck and is not something I would do with my 2500, just trying to understand this......Thanks Mike

Why would that be hard on the truck?

You have a GVWR besides the the axle ratings. The GVWR isn't necessarily the total of your axle ratings. The truck is probably lower than the sum of the axle ratings, the trailer may be more or less but is probably the same.

So if the truck is 9200 and the trailer is 14,000 you would be legal at 23,200 if loaded perfectly.

Why would that be hard on the truck? I guess it wouldn't be but the engine feels underpowered when I'm towing 12,000lbs counting the weight of the gosseneck. It pulls fine just high rpms and is slow on take offs..........Mike

You'd be legal as long as you registrations were for that weight,along with proper tires/rims for the load....many aftermarket wheels are only rated for 2500-3000lbs each,same with tires,sometimes ppl will put load range c or ds on a truck that needs E's....
From a safety standpoint no one cares if you have a 6.0 or a duramax under the hood,what matters is the truck can handle and stop the weight,and run down the road without overheating and blowing tires....

I find it hard to believe that a DOT that didn't care about GVWR would worry about tire/rim ratings.

Nice trailer, I recently too was trying to decide between a BP and a light weight gooseneck. I ended up picking up a 20ft BP, but I only had a 1/2 ton, 2005 F-150. But my tractor is about the same weight as yours. I knew you would be fine, because my F-150 towed mine well, so I knew you would be good. Of course it is slower, but what isn't with 10k behind it.

How well does your truck pull that load up the hill from the river bridge heading into Newton? lol. Everyone thinks south AL is flat, but if they saw the road I tow on (189 from Elba to Brantley) they would think other wise. But I still have no problems. I also have never had any law enforcement give me any trouble while towing or hauling. Alabama is not a **** state about things like that like CA or NY.

I just sold my F-150 last week and picked up a 07 Nissan Armada with the big tow package. The SUV is rated a 9,100, thats not to shabby. I haven't got to tow my 20 footer and tractor with it yet. But I plan on it as soon as I get home. Then I will probably post about it, then everyone can fuss at me and tell me that that truck sucks, and it's to small, (weighs 6,000lbs) and whatnot, and that I need a diesel.

Off the subject,Mike - is that a manual grapple or hydraulic on your loader bucket? I'm in the market for one of those; seems like itd be great for brush, logs, stones etc., how strong is it? Thanks!
