Semi-auto .22 rifle recommendations

I have no experience with a semi auto marlin. I have however a ruger 10-22 and a lever action marlin 39a Golden. I have wore the rifling out on the marlin. The 10-22 not so much, maybe I haven't found the "right" shells yet, I don't like it at all. I guess I am alone on that one. Never been able to hit squat with it open sight or scoped. I'll dance snuff cans 100 yds +/- with my marlin.

The Ruger gets my vote.

I have the a Ruger 10/22 and a Remington Nylon 66 (the original synthetic stock!) The Ruger is great fun with 25 shot clips (get a hot lips loader Moss) and the Remington has been around a long time in the family. Both are reasonably accurate but neither holds a candle to an old Browning T-Bolt in left hand. If I were buying today it would be the Ruger 22. Used I might look for an old Browning 22 semi takedown -- beautiful, accurate little guns only avaiable in wood stocks and grooved for scope mounting. no after aftermarket accessories available:rolleyes:

If you are looking for a used .22 semi auto rifle consider a Gevarm. It is an open bolt that was made France. Very nice little rifle. :D

I have a 39a Golden that I bought in '82, it's my squirrel gun. Back when I could see I could out shoot anyone with that thing. I deer hunt with a 336 so having two guns that handle the same is a bonus. Marlin makes great lever action rifles.

One of the little Rugers would be fun for plinking, I once saw one that had been converted to full auto with a 100 rd mag. My plinker is an old nylon 66, now that is a fun gun to shoot!

Ruger 10/22 here also, international model with stainless barrel and full laminated stock. A red dot scope rounds it out.

No doubt about it, the Ruger 10/22 is by far the best choice.

The 10/22 is probabally one of the most reliable .22 semi-autos this side of $500. But I agree that accuracy isn't the greatest, without modding. I had one, and ended up trading it in for a marlin 880SQ. It is a bolt action heavy barrel and very accureate. The beat I could ever do with the 10/22 was groups of about 2" @ 50 yds. The Marlin 880 can do 1/2" @ 50yds. So it depends on what your intended target and range is as to wether it would be the best choice. I cant speak on behalf of the marlin 60

But just another thought, thinking outside the box, have you considered a lever action. The new henry's can be had at Wal-mart for under $200. They are more accurate than the 10/22, and have the ability to shoot shorts as well. I perfer the longs but the old man likes the shorts for squirrel hunting and they shoot really well in the lever action.
