I don't think you have to register to view the forums on RFC.

Some folks appear to like the Simmons scopes that were made in Korea over the ones made in China.

Get yourself some lubriplate dry lube at walmart and use it to lube the bolt. The dry lube won't catch as much dirt as oil.

One of the posters here complained about his 10/22 bolt release. If you change the shape of the hole in the bolt release, it becomes a one handed job to release. See Auto Bolt Release Picture - RimfireCentral.com Forums

Does the bolt release still engage OK?

I have had a Ruger 10/22 for 20+ years. Lots of accessories available and its reliable. Keep it clean and I think it will work pretty much forever.

I have an old Marlin .22 bolt action which I like just fine, but I've been wanting a semi-auto. It seems like the Ruger 10/22 and Marlin M60 are the 2 most popular rifles. I've read that the Marlin may be a little more accurate right out of the box, but the Ruger can be modified in any way imaginable. Other than adding a scope, I don't intend to do any modifications to it, so I'm leaning more towards the Marlin. I'm mainly going to shop for used, but in the end I may end up buying new. What has been your experience/opinions of these. Don't be affraid to suggest any others also. As a side note, whatever I get will be with a wood stock. For some reason, I don't like synthetic/composite/plastic stocks on rifles & shotguns. Handguns are fine, just not long guns.

I'm a big fan of the Savage 22's,(i own 3) and really love my Mark II BTVLSS. It's a heavy ss barrel, thumb hole stock bolt action with the accutrigger which you can set from 2.5lbs to 10 lbs with out a gun smith, just turn one screw. you can also get a lighter spring and drop the trigger down to 1.5lbs. When i tell you that this gun is a tack driver i do mean a tack driver. will put all five rounds in side a dime at 50 yards.
I own a few 22 autos, (2) 10/22, a Winchester, and a S&W MP22. Just find a bolt action 22 a lot more fun.

Yes, if you profile the bolt release correctly, it works so much better that I wonder why Ruger doesn't make them that way to start with. Look carefully at the profile of the hole in the release in the link and match yours to it. If you mess it up, you can order another one for about $9.00.

Dry lube is also the way to lubricate the 1022 bolt as well because it doesn't collect crud as badly as oil.

The Savage accutriggers are also well regarded, and you don't waste as much ammunition with a bolt action.

Marlin 60s also have their well deserved fan base.

Another nice used semi auto would be a Winchester 77.:D

I like my Winchester 74. The through-the-stock magazine is cool. Don't know how accurate it is since I mainly use it to dispatch trapped varmints. I often don't seem to be able to hit the ground, but I blame myself for that.

remington 597 ive had it for 15+ years with a few thousand rounds through it. not a single problem over that time despite less than steller cleaning maintenance. I plink alot and mine is very accurate. i run iron sites on it and can still run my plinking target at 25yrds which means squirls, rats, rabbits, coons, possums etc dont stand a chance.

while the ruger 10/22 is ok, i dont know anyone that hasnt cussed the stupid rotary mag up and down over the life they have had the gun.

now that we are past the assault weapons ban you can readly find 25-30rd bannana clips for the 597.
I got my brand new pre-warning Ruger 10/22 as a wedding present. That was 45 years ago and have never had a problem with a factory 10-shot rotary magazine.
Here is a photo of another display of yankee ingenuity. In order to legally have (California) more that 10 rounds in the rifle, The TRI MAG locks three Ruger factory 10-shot mags together, just fan away and flip it twice for 30 rounds of excitement.

Another vote for the Ruger 10/22. 15 years old, stainless steel, never had any issues. Doesn't jam, light weight and fairly accurate with the steel sights. My 12 and 13 year old use it now.
