At Home In The Woods

WTF kind of country do we live in where someone who is IN THE COUNTRY with proper water and sewer cannot live in thier camper? How can they decide how you can and can't live? That's why you leave the city so you can live your life as you see it. Junky as you want to be, or clean as you want to be. What if you wanted to live in a tent?

To many "city folk" in the "country".:(

City folk have invaded our county and created mini horse farms...all well manicured with white board fences and such and as a result...up go the taxes and more and more zoning regulations. It will drive many older folks off their land since they can't pay the taxes any longer..really sad.

We don't have these problem here in my part of NW Georgia. No zoning. When we built our house 15 years ago on 15 acres on the side of a mountain we did not even have to have a building permit. The only requirement was a perk test.

Russ, I know what you mean, it was the same way here as recently as 25 yrs. ago but things change - enjoy it while you can. It sure was nice back then and to me it is really sad when you buy property and have to go with hat in hand to a bunch of folks sitting on an elevated platform and plead your case to be able to even build a pole barn...really sick !

Looks great Obed, now if I were you I would talk to your roofer and be sure they will use a good quality underlayment prior to the shingles and then nail in the roofing nails by hand instead of using nail guns. When we built our house 5 yrs. ago I made sure the roofer I used did not use nail guns and he told me he never did ..too many problems later..I watched the shingles go down and it was all by hand. Also special attention to the valleys..are you going to have ridge vents. I would suggest you do..Really looks great !

I wonder how many roofers are going to nail by hand vs using a nail gun. I imagine not many and if so you'll pay dearly. I personally think you get a better job using a gun as it is less physical than hand nailing.

Might have to take you up on that Dave and come visit someday.:)

Please do come visit Cyril. If you are right about the city enveloping your land, you will have to hunt a new place.

I have a neighbor who raises some beef cattle. Don't know how profitable it is here. He is getting old and not well, so the operation is declining. The better farms here are on river bottom land where the soil is a lot richer. There are some upland hay fields that do okay if well tended.

I was looking where Woodlin, WA is to have some understanding of your experience. Noticed US 2 runs through there, so of course I had to wisecrack a little. Looks like you are between Puget Sound and a Natl. forest area. That probably has an influence on the situation. Maybe your county envisions McMansions everywhere. What a dream

It is odd that zoning and master plan approaches really don't change the eventual outcome in most cases. It's sad to see good farmland built on.
Dave.
