Diesel Longevity worth the increased maintenance costs

VGT turbos are nothing new. Both the Dmax and 6.0 Ford Powerstoke have them also. Not sure about the new Powerstokes but I would guess they would since a waste gate is yesterdays technology.

Chris, I really haven't had too many issue with the truck. I just think alot of these common failures are a joke. All 6.0 have EGR's the only difference between any year of the 6.0 is the location of a few things (can't think of them off the top of my head FICM I think). Other wise they're all the same. I totally agree about the techs. I unfortuatly don't have good ones. I don't know why the dmax turbo's don't seem to have the same sticking issues as the 6.0's do.

The new powerstrokes are using a new turbo design they are calling Single Sequential Turbo. It is basically a turbo and a 1/2. It has 1 turbine with 2 compressors. It is suppose to be the best of a single turbo and twin turbos all in one. Only time will tell on that one.

I haven't seen any pricing yet on the 2011 D-max or powerstoke yet.

??? I know you're more up on the truck topics than I am, but I thought this WAS unique to Cummins and was the greatest thing to come down the pike.

I spent alot of time on the truck sites a couple of years ago when I bought mine and never heard any talk about VGTs in the other makes. Do they act as engine brakes in the others? and have a switch to turn on option?

Interesting you mention this. My old Kubota had about the same power of my old Farmall-A. Both were about 20hp.

To get that big torque, the Farmall was about 2x the size of motor for gas. Seeing some of the old fire engines, they had huge gas motors too; To make the torque was all about cubic inches.

And cubic inches don't get fuel economy.

Well considering this is a tractor site, the proof is in the pudding as to whether diesels are more cost effective than gassers.
Anyone making a gas powered tractor anymore ?

To get this thread back in the right general direction. If your towing heavy(10k+) on a regular basis and for long distances. To a vacation property or some other 300mile plus distance then a diesel is probably a good choice. Especially the PSD 7.3 or the 5.9 cummins. There mileage was good and they're good engines. If I were to do it over I'd like to get a nice 1/2 ton and then a good medium duty flat bed. The biggest issue is that a srw 1ton crew cab would be a perfect choice. But I feel the sticker and reliability along with increased maintenace and poor MPG make the 1/2t in meduim duty a better choice. The v10 certainly should not be overlooked.

They do not have a braking option from the factory. That is where Dodge is one up on the competition at the time but I know for a fact the Ford had a VGT since the introduction of the 6.0 in 2003. As Don said the Dmax has had one since its mid life. It was introduced around the same time as Ford, maybe a year later, in the LLY to help up the HP.

So, I'll be alright towing 14.5k over 2,800 miles...?? With a Dmax? That was the 5th trip over the Alcan.

They're usually around 8,000 miles round-trip.

Gonna go down and pick-up my new gooseneck in ID in about 10 days. Wanna come along? :D
