Thanks JB4310, ksimolo, J_J, ray66v and Iron Horse for the warning about galvanized fumes/smoke!;)

It might be a good idea to wear a respirator when welding on galvanized.- If one would fit under a welding helmet.

Or buy a used adflo helmet - keep you cool and out of the fumes.

A budget alternative for part time welders, who find a respirator creates as many problems, as solutions, is to use a cheap OIL-LESS air compressor, like from Sears, and locate it in a place where you are assured it has fresh air to pump.

Route a clean air hose from that compressor, to a regulator that will allow a low, but steady flow of air inside the helmet.

When the valve is set correctly, the positive pressure inside the helmet will keep the smoke and fumes out.

Do not use shop air, or air that comes from a oil lubricated compressor, or old hoses, and regulators that have been used on oil lubricated systems.

This is not going to be OSHA approved, but it will always be better than breathing the toxic fumes.

Being in the natural gas distribution business, I would think that a piece of 1-1/4. or 2" plastic gas line would be perfect! You'd want to get a scrap piece of 'stick' rather than coil, which retains it's coil 'memory'. We cut it with an electric chain saw, before facing it for butt-fusion. I'd bet that a long cut with a chainsaw, would leave a perfect 'kerf', to slide over the bucket blade. This plastic is much softer than PCV, thus, wear may be an issue, but I doubt it would 'shatter'! Talk to your local utility worker. They're pretty good folks! ~Scotty
