This whole Toyota thing has showed us just how really stupid our population has become towards operating a motor vehicle.

Ding, Ding, Ding! We have a winner.

This is being discussed on a another forum and here is the reply of an actual Pious owner.

Oh, I see now, it's as simply as using one hand to hold the steering wheel at 100mph, grab the shift lever with the other hand and move it to neutral and hold it there, then push the start button with my third hand. Right, got it , thanks coach!

But still have a hand free to use the phone to dial 911...Hmmm?

Toyota seems to be skirting around their problem, that seems to be more and more caused by their electronics (and maybe the "fly" by wire without mechanical connections).

Time to go back to some basics.

Should be able to turn off the ignition...one move.

Should be able to shift to Neutral....one move, no hold.

Should be able to put on the brakes .... and over-ride the engine.

Too many simple options taken away from the drivers.

(I still fume over not being able to turn off the ignition and remove the key while the car is not in Park. That is an option that should be available to a passenger in a car, driven by someone who should be stopped from driving ... be it a drunk, or reckless driver, or kidnapper,... whatever).

Yeah this one's hard to fathom, all the time it would take to have CHP catch up with him and then just tell him to put on the brakes?

I mean if that's what it takes to bolster domestic car sales, so be it, the guys a patriot I guess. Doesn't seem fair but have you ever seen the Japanese play baseball, I haven't, but heard they don't play fair at all.

Probably not a good idea, to loose all steering control not just the power assist.
Could always do the drunken passenger move, reach over and throw the tranny in reverse at 50 MPH?

So let's get this straight. The government requirement to have the steering wheel lock when the key is turned off has made a bad situation much worse. Sorry just picking on the government. If you think about this, disabling the steering in a car, key on or off, is not really a good idea. Let's disable the brakes too. This will show that thief.

Wasn't talking of disabling the steering. Used to be one could turn the key off, and remove it....without locking the steering column. But that may have been before your time. :)

My GM vehicles can be turned off without locking the wheel.

So can mine. But if you are moving at 40 MPH when you do so, the tranny does not go to neutral from drive and the engine keeps turning over. Turn the switch back on at 25 MPH and it acts like nothing ever happened and you don't need to hit the starter.

I remember those systems. I did not mean ti criticize you. I just seem to look a regulations and see unintended consequences.

IMO, with all the publicity lately over Toyota accelerator malfunctions, there is practicaly no excuse other than arrogance or lazinesss for a Toyata driver to not familiarize themselves with they're vehicles functions, for example, having to hold the shifter in neutral on the prius.

After all the publicity, if the drivers still can't figure out what to do when this happens, driving off a bridge at WOT is natural selection, mothers natures way of killing off the stupid so they cannot further pollute the gene pool with they're ignorance.
