Economically speaking, I wish I owned a Kubota RTV to drive down to the road and get my mail - especially when it's raining and blowing like today :D

Evening SigArms,

I just checked, it costs $21.82 for FedEx 2Day service Raleigh to Philly (for example) including a scheduled residential pickup at your end.

My question remains; what will UPS or FedEx do for you for 44 cents? They are not in the same business - checking 99.9% of the US mailboxes for outgoing mail and leaving mail six days per week.

Actually, I shouldn't say 'business', the USPS was never a true business. It was founded as a government service and remains a quasi-government organization that tries to be self-supporting. There are many Federal laws that apply to the postal service from your mailbox to politician's franking privileges.

I don't think current politics enter into the discussion.
From wikipedia:
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is an independent agency of the United States government responsible for providing postal service in the United States. It is one of the few government agencies explicitly authorized by the United States Constitution. Within the United States, it is commonly referred to as the "Post Office", "Postal Service", or "U.S. Mail".

Though postal services have existed on American territory before the United States' establishment, the USPS's first incarnation was established by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia in 1775 by decree of the Second Continental Congress. The Post Office Department was created from this in 1792 as part of the United States Cabinet, its current form in 1983 under the Postal Reorganization Act.

Since its reorganization into an independent organization, the USPS has become self-sufficient and has not directly received taxpayer-dollars since the early 1980s. The decline of mail volume due to increased usage of e-mail has forced the postal service to look to other sources of revenue while cutting costs to maintain this financial balance.[3]

If you aren't happy with the USPS - tell Ben about it :D:D:laughing:

Who was it that told me on another post that we need to amend the Constitution from time to time, Wait let me think a minute, who was that?:)

Dave...that doesn't sound like a very efficient use of scarce resources. :D Assuming resources are scarce of course...:D

 Regarding the USPS....I live about 2 miles from the local post office. All the people there, from the carriers to the people behind the counter are very friendly and genuinely willing to help. We are in the country, so the carriers use their own vehicle and not an official USPS truck. We started out with an RD x Box nnn when we first moved here, now we have an official street address. They've always been great to deal with.

Having said this, when I have a package to send, documents to mail, or something 'odd' to ship, I drive right by the local post office another 5 miles to The UPS Store (used to be a Mailboxes, etc.). The people at The UPS Store are not any friendlier than the people at the USPS. Rather, they seem focused on both customer service and helping you get whatever it is you have to send to it's destination as cheaply as possible. They will even tell you if that's USPS. I can walk into The UPS Store and simply have the item I want to send and the destination address. They will handle everything else. Am I paying for that? Sure I am. Are they making more profit when they do all the work? I am sure they do. This is the added value The UPS Store can offer because the guy behind the counter is the owner of the business, not just an employee. I've talked to the owner and he instills this same attitude in his employees.

Every fence has two sides :D

Actually, I believe I said we shouldn't be surprised if an amendment is needed, or to that effect. That's a little different.

In this case I was trying to illustrate why the USPS is not and never was an actual business. Shameless maybe?
Dave.

Oh, they are scarce enough to recognize a toy (for me) when they see one :) They have their uses I'm sure.

My mailbox is about 700' from the house. Uphill and into the wind both ways. :p

Yep. I have used Mailboxes Etc/UPS Store. Got great service and nice people. A very useful, nice franchise. It's really nice that once you send to an address, they have it all in their computer.

I agree a hands-on owner can make a big difference compared to someone who doesn't make the rules and will probably get in trouble for bending them.

Keegs, you make a good point!
Let me give you the full definition: "Economics; The study of scarce resources with alternative uses."
I would assume that most people on TBN would love to have a ATV. Why can't they? Because they are a "scarce resource"
i.e. somebody wants actual money for them.
So how do we allocate this scarce resource, Well Dave could petition the govt, and say,I need one because my po box is so far from my door, etc etc.
So we could have allocation by Govt,
OR,
We could have allocation by price(free market)
Dave decides that he some money(scarce resource with alternative uses), but his wife says sure you can have an ATV honey(I know Dave, stop laughing)but Dave decides
to buy his wife a new washer instead(Dave is Happy, because Mom is happy!)
So you decide which one works better.
Unless of course you think that every one is "entitled"to an ATV, because its a "right" to have one:)

Hopefully Dave,
You see the Constitution as a fence,One that protects all Americans from some very real threats from outside that fence. We can argue about the color of the fence or how tall it is, but at the end of the day, I sure hope that you and I will agree to preserve, protect, and defend the Fence:)
