Residential Mail - Do You Need Saturday Delivery?

Regarding the USPS....I live about 2 miles from the local post office. All the people there, from the carriers to the people behind the counter are very friendly and genuinely willing to help. We are in the country, so the carriers use their own vehicle and not an official USPS truck. We started out with an RD x Box nnn when we first moved here, now we have an official street address.

We had the same thing when we bought the place out in the country at the end of 1994, except I lived about 10 miles from the post office. The first morning I went into the post office, the Postmistress asked if I'd fill out a little card she had there that asked things such as "If something won't fit in the box and no one is home, would you like the item left somewhere, if so where, or do you want to pick it up at the post office?" Then she asked, "Would you like to meet your carrier?" and called her husband to the counter from where he had been sorting mail.:D I think they had one part time clerk and one part time carrier for Saturdays besides the 2 of them.

Yeah think I could do without Sat delivery. Probably could go mwf. Seems to be when I was a wee lad (early 60's) we used to get twice a day delivery. Course the mailmen rode the city busses used tricart with leather bags on both sides and refilled mail every so often out off locked green mailboxs that a truck delivered. And this was in a residential area Andy was his name many year carrier just pasted 3-4 yrs ago. Ah memeories

I never knew of twice a day delivery in residential areas, but the downtown businessed in zones 1 and 2 in Dallas had twice a day delivery. That was the first "scheme" I had to throw, which meant to memorize every address in downtown Dallas and which one of 43 carriers delivered to that address.

When I was a carrier in a small town, the post office only had one vehicle, a 1949 Willys panel wagon that was leased. It had no driver's door and no muffler, so everyone in town, including all the dogs, recognized it from afar before it came into sight.:D It was used to deliver parcel post and to deliver the mail to those relay boxes where we refilled the leather bag that we carried slung over a shoulder; never had any of those carts.

Oh, they are scarce enough to recognize a toy (for me) when they see one :) They have their uses I'm sure.

My mailbox is about 700' from the house. Uphill and into the wind both ways. :p
Dave.

Sounds like allot of wind breaking on the way to the mailbox Dave. :)

There's a woman carrier that we bump into when we're out with the dog on Saturday morning. When the dog sees her he sits and she comes over and gives him a rub and a biscuit. I think the dog would miss Saturday deliveries.

WOW, I get sick for two days and you guys tripple the size of this thread. I'm going to have to move the computer by the bed if you keep this up. Still not enough energy to sit up and read this long.
The only good thing about getting sick is I had some good ole chicken noodle soup today. First thing since Sunday.

I'm feeling better this afternoon. Not sure if it was bad food or a stomach flue, but boy did I go down hard and fast. Went to work Monday feeling fine and within 2 hours it was all I could do to get home. 24 hours of visiting the comode and I'm doing better, but still feeling weak. I should be back to work tomorrow. The one thing I did learn from this is that Mochas (coffee) taste a lot better going down than comming back up.:confused2:

My personal theory is that many times we blame the flu for what was really food poisoning. Either way, it's no fun for sure. It does take the starch out of a guy for a couple days until things in your gut get back in balance. Don't over do it.

I think nixing Sat delivery and maybe more would be fine. Alot of it is junk mail, especially when it comes to companies like Verizon, Cox cable, etc. I think all their tv commercials have it covered. Plus they would probably save a few bucks not mailing all those flyers (which could mean lower rates, but probably not). Those things are almost cardboard they're so thick, they can't be cheap at the rate they send them out. We are responsible for 375 summer residents mail and get at least 1 stack(375) from each company a week. Guess where they end up by request?
