Had a few PM's come in asking me what I'm up to these days so I figured I'd post. I'm into the busy season here but I'm also replacing some of my welding gear. There's noting wrong with any of it it's just that I have another company owner that buys up all my old welding gear each time I replace it so this week he bought my miller Spectrum 701 plasma and my Millermatic 251.

I decided to replace the 701 which was a Hugh machine with the Miller Spectrum 875 plasma. it does the same job as the 701 but it's only the size of a lunch box and It can be used with my mobile welding unit.

The Millermatic 251 was replaced with the MM 252 and for the larger work I have the Millermatic 350P on the way so i should have all bases covered with this set up.

Today I put the power plug on the 252 and put the 50 lbs of .035 wire in the unit. I don't like the way Miller made the handles. They did them that way so you could hang the gun and grounds on. I noticed that miller sells a holder for this that bolts to the side of the machine but if you buy it you can't but the cover on the machine because the holder is in the way.

To solve that problem I made my own holder out of aluminum and using threaded inserts I bolted to the back of the machine and now I got a cable hanger and I can use my cover. The next thing I will be doing with it is to fabricate a holder to place the plasma on the side of the 251. That way everything will be near by if I need it.

The spool gun will be used with the 350P. That machine will be running 90-10 gas and argon and it will be loaded with .045 wire.

Here's a few pics of the day. Oh the first pics is of the new positioner. That sure came in handy this week.

Gotta love those threaded inserts.

After the holder was fabbed up it was etch primed and painted.

Now I can put the cover on

First weld with the 252

When I put this on I'll look like a weldor from the hood!

Well that's what I'm up to. I'll post more pics when the other gear shows up.

Nice equipment, 4shorts!

I'm hoping one day to have the bux to swing a Miller machine.
Hope this doesn't sound dumb, but could you post a close-up of the positioner? I'd like to get a better idea of how it works and what it does.
Thanks.

I've keep looking at the 211 and 212, but haven't bitten the bullet for either one yet.

I've always said that there's no dumb questions on these forums and I think your question is the complete opposite of dumb. I had a customer come in the shop the other day who owns a cement plant and got two full time welders on the payroll and asked me what that thing "Positioner"was so and I'm betten there's many more out there that don't know either so later today I'll post a video of what it does and how it works for you but in the short of it. You use it to clamp in your welding work. Clamp it in the vise and turn it to whatever position you need it at while welding. It can be placed in a vertical position or anywhere down to a horizontal position. The positioner rotates and the speed can be adjusted and the rotation can be changed from clockwise to counter clockwise at the flick of a switch. It can be controlled by a foot switch as seen in the photo. It's a must have if your doing pipe work or rebuilding shafts on rollers as you see in the photo.

Geez and were supposed to be an automotive repair shop. How did that happen :laughing:

Hey no postman yet???

I've keep looking at the 211 and 212, but haven't bitten the bullet for either one yet.

Both great machines. I'm sure when you get one you'll say "How did I go so long without this thing" Good luck sir.

Great Looking equipment !

Don't it bother you though when you have to fix or fabricate something as with your holder when you buy something new ? It has always made me wonder if makers of products , pre-test their design on others rather than just in house . That goes for just about anything including vehicles .

Still though , Awesome welder and great looking weld .

Thanks 4shorts! That sounds really cool. Why weld upside down when you can get it where you want it. Moving the workpiece has to be way better speed and quality than moving the welder.
Yup, no postman yet. Maybe it's coming by boat? :)

I'll watch for the video.

Today I will drop a few trees to get more sun in the garden. I figure I'll build a bracket to chain a winch to a stump and load the tree to fall AWAY from the house. At least that's the idea. I don't want to end up in a "Ten Worst Tree Cutters" video.

No waiting to be saying that statement. Tooooooo many things which could use some welding around here.

Yes Fred it does bother me to have to modify it but they do sell that holder but the way they have it bolt to the machine means I couldn't put the cover on so doing it my way means I get the best of both worlds. I guess they didn't put to much thought into it. If anyone buys there holding attachment and the cover one of them items will have to be returned and that means a lost sale for miller. not smart at all in my opinion. Thanks. Paul

I'll let you know when I do the video. I was going to do it this morning but I woke up to a pile of snow and had to get the tractor up and running. thank god for heated cabs :D

You keep an eye open for that postman. I couldn't send a package all the way from Newfoundland and not put in some extras ;) It takes a few weeks for sure but you'll have it soon.

I know what you mean about welding things. That's how I got into this stuff. everything I had one time needed welding  How did your sleeves work out?

This is what I woke up to this morning  but on the bright side of it I made some money out of it :D I should have had the tractor in the shop though :ashamed:

Rob's work is like yours...pure artwork! The sleeves look great. I have them on the cables, but a friend has my controls so that he can make up a mounting bracket for me. I'll have to wait until he's done and I get the controls back to reattach the cables to them and test everything out. Should be mowing with it within a couple of weeks.
