The way I see it, once someone is in my house, they are a mortal threat to me and my family. I can say that without checking to see if they are armed. I would make an honest effort to get out of the house, I don't care about possessions, but I promise you, if I cross paths with you on the way to get my family out, the lead will start flying in short order.
West Virginia castle doctrine agrees with this. California probably requires you to surrender your loaded weapon and valuables to an intruder, and you are probably subject to a civil suit if you do not.
