I have been lurking here reading alot of good info on the yanmars, I have been looking for a good compact to buy, my son has a new JD 2305 and has been bugging me to get one but I can't see spending that much for the amount I am going to use it, I borrowed my friends YM270D ( I think) about five years ago, he bought it new in 1982 with all the attachments and it was a joy to use. I have been looking at a YMG1800D and if I get it I plan on using this to work around the yard, and help make some walking trails in our woods, clean our 600 gravel driveway with a large gravel lot near the house but here I am not sure what to use with this tractor, bucket would be too slow, not sure what size rear blade this tractor could push? we get up too 14-18" every so often and I also thought of a rear snow blower but not sure of the size or if the PTO rotation is correct. I have read a few specs on this tractor here and they list it as a 21.5 HP is that PTO HP? thanks for the help

It has 18, YM(18)00, pto hp, and standard pto rotation, (whatever that is).

As to the size "rear blade" I would say 5' max for a open blade, 4' max on a box scrape....ofcourse you can try bigger as some others but I can tell you that pushing in reverse you will lose traction really fast on a light machine, the 4WD will help alot.

A 3ph is not designed for pushing, only pulling. You can bend the lower link arms or destroy your axle housings where they are mounted. Assuming the rear blade will pivot on an angle you should get one that will cover your tracks when fully angled, probably 6 or 7'. They are pretty light weight.

standard pto rotation, (whatever that is).

Some of the earliest import tractors had counter rotating PTOs with goofy splines.

My little old Kubota B6000E does.

Good info. however most box scrapes have a blade on both sides making it useful in reverse?? just my observation.

you will lose traction (as in the thread on ag tires don't grip well in reverse, should have stated that in my first post) before anything bends?

Reading about so many guys, over the years, bending and breaking their 3ph linkage from pushing their boxblades made a believer out of me.

I must have been lucky as I spend half my time pushing with the box as i do pulling, maybe no damage because my box scrape does not have the cutting blade on the rear side, when I'm pushing with it it is more like pushing leveling over, not literally pushing digging,

I appreciate all the answers, I can't wait till I get the tractor (I think a YMG1800D, I am still not sure about the winter plowing though, I guess I will have to wait till winter to find out. I will install a loader for some yard work and a rear blade for winter.
thanks

I have read these engines are good for anywhere from 6000-10000 hrs, that would be great but it seems so many are rebuilt before 2000 hrs.?, it could be only people with problems write into forums and trouble free go unnoticed, how many hrs does everyone have on thier tractors?

The hour meter on my 240D rolls over at 999, but judging by wear and tear and general condition I would say about 1700 hrs on it. still runs like a top, uses no oil and runs no higher than 170 degrees no matter how hard I work it.

Ridge, a diesel engine can last a long time, I doubt any will make it to 8-10k hours without some repair or rebuild even with strict maintenance.

The ones rebuilt before 2,000 hours are probably neglected, abused and have been overheated at some point. I have 800 hours on mine with nothing needing repaired/replaced but a shifter spring, I do change the oil /filter at 50 hours, fuel filter every spring, new air filter every other spring, hydraulic fluid every 300 hours, I know the manual states the intervals to be longer but I think its cheap insurance to keep the fluids fresh.

My FX24D dropped a valve at ~1200 Hrs and tore up a cyl. and piston. Not your normal failure.

Unless you bought your tractor new or have a "0000.0" odometer, And not a Vn reman, there is no way to know.

I was a Maintence Manager at a trucking company for 26 yrs a few years back and we seen most of our engines (Detroit) run approx. 26k to 34k hrs before overhaul, if we changed a head gasket in the 22k hr or more we would normally overhaul it as we had 12 hrs of the 40 already into it. i know the small engines are different but i wasn't sure to what degree. We also oil sampled every change approx. 370-400 hrs (19000-22000 miles) it would vary if the driver would stay out on the road longer than normal.

Ridge you may also want to note that on most Yanmars a hour on the meter is a hour at a specified RPM. I think on mine it is 2600 RPM. So it would have to idle at 1000 RPM for 2.6 hours to register 1 hour on the meter.

Ah, that i didn't know, our trucks are all electronic, we would plug a Laptop in them and we could tell what the driver was doing anytime the key was on, and even the outside temp

I just put money down on a YMG1800D, hopefully I made the right choice, I could of had a YM1720D with powershift for same price and close hrs. (500)but I like to keep it simple. We are waiting 4 weeks to pick it up as we are moving to a different area and don't need it where we are now.
