I just purchased a 1995, JD 5400 L/BH.

I have a few questions about the machine and how to use certain features. I've ordered the user manual from JD, but would like to ask the group a few questions...

Thanks!

Martin.

Ask your questions...most functions are similar between different models so I am sure someone can help.

Thanks for the help.

The tractor was always used as a backhoe.

I purchased it earlier this week. Work great. I want to use it mainly to pull a box scraper though. I removed the Hoe; was quite easy; a few pins, 3 hoses and I was done in 10 minutes.

I tried to make the hydraulic arm of the 3 point hitch go up/down, etc... and no response. To the right of my seat there are two levers, I moved'em up & down, etc.. with no avail. any idea how to get that arm to drop/lift?

The three hoses I disconnected from the hoe (1 female, 2 male)... Am I supposed to do anything with them? I just capped them. Does this have anything to do with my previous problem?

Lastly, since I want to attach a box scraper. I assume I need a few arms, chains, rods, etc... to set up the 3PH. I saw ads online for 3 Point Hitch Kits... Is this what I need? Can you recommend one that works well with the 5400?

Thanks for your help!

Oh, I forgot the tires...

I have two rear turf tires... no good for me. I need Ag tires.

This is for light ranch use. My tractor is a 2WD. The specified tire size is 16.9-30.

Where can I get a really good price to value deal on tires like this? Keep in mind I'm interested in more traction; the rest isn't too important for me since it is light ranch work on weekends.

Any recommendations on good price to value?

Also, can I put other widths instead of 16.9? More options would allow me to get a better price maybe.

Thanks!

As to the hoses: You need to connect the pressure hose back to the return that feed the 3PH. Running the the lines "capped" is very bad on your machine-the pressure line (from the pump) has flow in it whenever the tractor is running. This is called "Power Beyond". The engine probably sounded labored because the hydraulic system was going into "relief". The fluid will overheat quickly like this, I hope you did not run the machine for long like that.

Edit: It looks like on the 5400 there is a valve block that the PB lines are fed from, you will need to move the lever on the block to direct fluid to the 3PH.

See the first picture below and see if it matches what you have.

For the 3HP: You got no parts with the machine? WOW, it is going to be expensive to get them all...there is a lot of parts to it like the draft arms, side links, sway control chains, center link. I don't link one of the universal "kits" will help you much-But I hope I am wrong.

To replace the turf's, you will also need new rims since AG or R1 tires will not fit on those rims...

Thanks for the advice!

There are 3 hoses, 2 male & 1 female. Which male do I plug with the female?

Thanks!

Look around for a tractor junk yard. They can be hard to find, but most areas have one. That will be your cheapest way of getting the arms etc. May not be exact but you might find something close.

Here are the pictures I just took.

One male is colored green. The other male colored yellow.

The green male and female hoses come right next to each other. The yellow male comes out at a different location.

Any suggestion on how to connect these?

Thanks!
