"Yes, I know that."

I have also driven many vehicles without power assist!

There is a big difference By Gar.

There may also be some differences on how the linkages are set up!:D

Linkages? Aren't they all brake by wire now?

That is just another form of Linkage!

Wait till the wireless systems come out!

You'll have a driving controller that can be passed around the vehicle!:D

Has there been any reports that some one simply turned the ignition key to the OFF postion? Not the Lock postion that locks the steering wheel in which the car usually has to be in park. Woiuld this would stop the rogue vehicle???

Yes it would stop it from moving under its own power anyway other than inertia. That's what 911 etc has been instructed to tell them also.

I for one am still waiting for a confirmed case and the reason why of this behavior by the experts that are checking some of these cars. If there was one it would be front page of every paper and on every news show everywhere that's all we would hear. I think its not as cut and dry indictment of Toyota as the goobermint wants us to believe jmho.

This assume the vehicle in question has an ignition key. our '04 Prius doesn't. It has a big round button labeled START. Pressing it repetitively steps it through the "standard" selections that a key switch has historically offered; accessory, run, start, and off (not in that order.)

Yesterday my wife took ours in for service and recall attention to the floor mat or some such. We had no problem but it was going in for our "free for as long as we own the car" oil change and tire rotation and whatever is on the preventative maint schedule so she let them do the recall thing. It just meant she would read maybe another chapter or two in her current book.

If you have no physical key switch that actually interrupts the flow of electricity to the ignition or other required to run item then you are at the mercy of the computer which is malfunctioned or malfunctioning. If the computer is putting you into a position of extremis due to a malfunction or software error then to expect it to react normally to a computer input (such as you pressing the button to shut the engine off) is unwarranted wishful thinking.

I believe the instructions from Toyota are to push and hold the start button for a full 3 seconds. I have an Avalon with this system and 3 seconds can be an eternity in an acceleration scenario. Additionally when this vehicle sold no one ever told us how to shut it off in drive.

Thanks Pat, I was not doing any "wishful thinking" just curios about this whole run away car scenario.
I was an auto mechanic for 12 years prior to getting my current job that I have been in for the last 20 years. I drive an old antiquated 07 3500 dodge ram. I have never driven the new fangled keyless push button remote vehicles.
The "fly-by-wire" has never appealed to me even when I had my 1995 powerstroke and could not find the throttle cable :D Later to my total amazement I had an electrical short in one of the valve cover gaskets :confused2: I am often glad I am out of that business..

I had no idea the Prius had no key; don't guess I've ever seen such. Of course, I've never even considered a Toyota when shopping for vehicles, so I've not looked at them. Is it also push button shifting, or can you you shift to neutral mechanically?

Wonder how many of our members remember the push buttonof the late 1950s (especially 1958), such as the Plymouths with the push buttons on the left end of the dash, or the Edsel with the push buttons in the center of the steering wheel?

Oh yes Bird, I remember the Edsel push button shift in a circle in the center of the steering wheel. I worked at a garage in the early '60's and at lease every other week, we'd get a call to bring out the wrecker and get a good customer's car out of park. They had a steep drive way and if they parked on the slope leading up to the garage, it wouldn't come out of Park. We'd pick up the rear of the car and then it would come out of park.
I think Rambler also had a model that had push button shift.
