We'd pick up the rear of the car and then it would come out of park.

Yep, I remember that.

I do remember my Grandparents Plymouth that had push button selector for the auto. trans.. Man that seemed so cool at the time

The little town from which I graduated from high school in 1958 had a town marshall and night watchman instead of a police department. The town marshall was the worst hotrodder in that town. He just didn't think he should start a stationary car to moving without hearing the tires squall. I heard that he tore the transmission out of a 1955 Olds 5 times, then shelled out the engine in a 1957 Ford, so in early 1958, the town bought a genuine police package Plymouth; push button automatic, two 4 bbl. carbs, plain rubber floor mats and smooth leather seats. The marshall just couldn't tear it up. I got to drive it a couple of times and would have loved to be able to afford one. That car could take all the abuse he could dish out. So one night, he decided to see how fast it would run, and he was way outside town on a state highway and scraped a bridge bannister. That tore off the right front fender which pulled the grill off with it. And I'd say he was incredibly lucky it wasn't much worse. And that was when the town fathers decided it was time to create a police department and hire an outsider as chief.

Wonder how many of our members remember the push shifting of the late 1950s (especially 1958), such as the Plymouth's with the push buttons on the left end of the dash, or the Edsel with the push buttons in the center of the steering wheel?

Oh yes, I can recall those quite easily. Even got to drive an Edsel with the buttons.

I had a 57 Plymouth but it had a lever on the steering column with a clutch pedal on the floor.:D

better get use to cars without keys, pretty soon they all will be like that.
I too am curious about what is happening. Guess I should go to the Prius chat website and nose around a little.
I also got the recall for the floor mat. What a joke. Mine has the hook in the corner and 1/8" spikes on the bottom. I guess if some elephant is trying to get in and out of the car the mat might slide up. Oh wait this is American, so maybe we could have some "large" people trying to get in and out the car. :D
Still think the issue was blown out of proportion .

You and me too brother well said!!!

I have been waiting for someone to state the engineering excellence of Toyota and the fact they attach their floor mats with a hook as long as Mr car owner etc doesn't mess with it ;).

I fix Asian cars for a living mainly Toyota's and Honda's and I cant count how many other branded cars I see with the mats jammed up under the pedals its ridiculous and dangerous!

I remember when you used to be able to actually shift into 4WD too. I wonder if anyone still makes a 4WD that isn't shifted by a servo?

That makes me laugh. My older brother had a truck that you had to lock the hubs to get into 4WD. Dad borrowed it so we could go out into the state forest and get some wood. We're tooling along and we encounter a big LONG puddle. Well about half way through he made my brother and I get out and lock the hubs in. The water was about half up the tire, so needless to say we got pretty wet. He never did hear the end of that.

I remember thinking the first time I saw a push button start on a recent car i said to myself "WHY????????????????????????"

Now im thinking was a stupid effing idea...there's nothing wrong with a key and turn, works for the past 40 years just fine.

Also, why can't I buy a 4x4 with a transfer case lever and lockout hubs anymore????

Same reason you can't get a stick in a SuperDuty anymore; it's called economics. All this fancy new technology is "MUCH" more expensive to purchase than the tried and true features some of us are used to

I had no idea the Prius had no key; don't guess I've ever seen such. Of course, I've never even considered a Toyota when shopping for vehicles, so I've not looked at them. Is it also push button shifting, or can you you shift to neutral mechanically?

Bird, My aunt who taught Biology for 30+ years in Duncan, OK had a Plymouth with push button shift.

The Prius has a short dash mounted shift lever which is NOT mechanically connected to anything but its mount. Its physical position is an input to the computer like a mouse or joy stick.
