I hear you about safe. Actually here, because we are zone 4, but with really a zone 3 micro-climate, there is never a month without the possibility of frost. Froze twice in June last year and again twice and hard in August. It's just a way of life here.

About the same weather up here. Or actually I'm probably directly due east of you. Only mowed the lawn twice this yr. Good luck with the crops. tom, aotoes won't go out until end of month, see how the weather is after the full moon.

Or weed it! That is a lot of work. I am thinking of trying plastic mulch in my garden this year to cut down on the weeding.

I tried that a few years ago. It worked well, but don't make the same mistake I did and leave the stuff down at the end of the season. The sun weakens it and winter shreds it and by the following spring you'll have zillions of little bittys of plastic floating around your garden. Pull it all up in the fall and you'll be fine.

Raining hard for a week now. Those things floating away yet? My asparagus stopped dead in its tracks. Strawberries growing strong:licking:

Not sure where Liberty Township is, as in which County, but up here, we are 5" down for the year and 9" down for the 12 month period. We simply have not gotten the rain that down state has. Our soils are all sand and gravel so standing water is impossible. :D

I've actually been wondering if it would need to come up even earlier... we get in the low 100's here and I was wondering if it will make the soil too hot and inhibit plant growth? Guess I will just have to give it a try.

If you can get enough, newspaper makes really good mulch to stop weeds. I put it around my tomatoes and hold it down with compost, or just sprinkle a little soil over it. At the end of the season you just till it in.

We will put out about 2,000 tomato plants, 2,000 pepper plants, 400 eggplant, 3,000 cabbage and about 11,000 onions. That is in addition to all the items planted with the seeder and about six acres of potatoes. It does give a person a little something to do.

Just another little "hobby" garden to keep you and the missus busy again this year? Nice David! Good luck with your crops.

As the weather forecast calls for highs in the upper 70's and low 80's and no frost in the 10 day forecast, I went ahead and set 30 more tomato plants this morning, 30 cauliflower and 30 broccoli. I don't have hot caps for the pepper plants, so I am holding these back. They'll do fine growing in the bay window until after the full moon at the end of the month. That's the moon phase that always scares me a bit. That Memorial Day freeze.

I still have my 300-400 onion sets to plant, but they too are fine just sitting in the ground being nursed along. They are hardy enough to set out, I just don't have any lumbar left today.:(

Mine were a nice dark green. They are now black as coal. Let's give it 10 days and we'll start a new thread about "come back taters" :D

It has been 2 weeks since it froze and the 'taters are looking good but I think they are set back a good 3-4 weeks.

I planted 19 tomatoes and 50 pepper plants and I am not quite sure why.
