In the Spring Time one really should have a Pocket Knife!

When in trouble a sapling can be cut. A whistle can be made and help can be summoned!:D

You obviously whittle much better and faster than I do.:D

It's mostly tapping on the bark that takes the time. Haven't made one in at least 50 years.:( That is a waste of available entertainment!:D

Though I would prefer a fixed blade like a Gerber LMF or a Pendleton - ina pinch , a Pocket knife can be lashed to a stick and you have a spear , Fish for dinner anyone ? A pocket knife can be used to cut reeds so you can use as a straw to naturally filter water out of a pond (kinda like natures cheese cloth.)

I've mentioned before that the real sadness in my heart is that my kids can't carry a pocket knife without looking like a criminal. They'd get expelled from school. Straight A students. Honorable kids. Socially responsible. But can't carry a Cub Scout knife to whittle a stick at recess, or, as Egon suggested, make a whistle. Very sad. :(

I agree it is really sad to see how things are changing. When I was younger and in Boy Scouts we all had knives and were proud to be able to carry them with us. It was like a symbol to show that we were prepared and knew how to properly use a knife. Now days though if a kid is caught with one there is a huge deal about it. Whats even worse is in the end, its the good kid that is responsible with it that gets caught and the kid that might be looking for trouble goes unnoticed it seems.

I saw a story a couple weeks back where a young kid in school gave a classmate a Jolly Roger candy at lunch time. And was suspended from school.

I know two people who should be looking for a new job, the teacher and the principal.

Later,
Dan

""7) "Knife" means any bladed hand instrument that is capable of inflicting serious bodily injury or death by cutting or stabbing a person with the instrument. """
Sure sounds quite general lol. My dad used to carry the flat single edge razor type (box cutter) and also a small screw driver. Just yesterday I asked if he had it with him But now he doesnt carry them.
The razor knife would sure be good if there was a car accident and neded to cut the belt.I had a couple in all the cars.

I've carried a pocket knife since I was knee high to a grasshopper! Won't leave home with out it. Heck, I carry it to church of all places.:D Never know when you might need it. Cut, pry, screwdriver, small hammer (closed), etc. The one I have now fits nicely in a scabbard that fits on my belt. It will go in my back pocket when the scabbard is not worn. Like others have said, it's a tool not a weapon. I usually take a gun to a knife fight anyway! Never been in one actually but when a snake is involved I prefer the firearm. I, like others, have had to go back out to my truck and leave it after trying to do business at the county courthouse! Sad, like others have said also that you can't even have them at school! How's a few guys going to play mumbly peg or whittle? We used to carry guns in the back window and go to school with them displayed! Fit right in with the hats, lariat ropes that hung there.

I carry a knife since 2nd grade or so. Not the same, but I always have a knife on me. It is hard in our area - like DC museums scan you on entrance and I had to run the knife back to the car more than once:)
Also with my new job, I started to carry Skeletool, psychologically it is more on the tool side than knife. But when there is no knife in my right pocket I feel almost incomplete:D
