Why you should carry pocket knife in the country

I dont carry a knife anymore as im absent minded and lose them. I had a 99 model Schrade Mom got me for Christmas. When I had my wreck in 01 it was in my pocket and when my legs hit the dash and steering column I broke my leg right below the hip. Right in front of the break a bruise in the shape of my Multitool on my leg. I missed it when I went back to to work because part of my job as a mechanic it was handy to pull the throttle control cotter pins on some pumps. I sent my old one back and got a new one still Pre04. I think I lost it out of my pocket running the scraper at work.

A friend of mine had a knife his Grandad had in WW2 He was in an airport after 911 and faced losing his knife. The airport happened to have some sort of freight service and sent it home. My dad lost an old Sodbuster with a carbon steel blade. He couldnt find one I found 2 on ebay. He keeps it in the truck when he has to run the dozer.

On enforcement of knives I never met Amy's grandfather but he was a collector. When Amy's grandma found out I liked antiques she put some things away for me. One was a large folding knife. It turned out to be a Case WW2 Survival machete for the Pacific Airmen. The other was called a Colorado It has a scabbard with a hatchet attachment. You push a lock on the handle and can change them out. Whe n I got them I had them in the truck and got pulled over in a road block. The officer and I had some words when he was gonna take them as concealed weapons as they were longer than normal . I really had to stand my ground till some level headed officers came to the scene. Seems the officer didnt know that they arent concealed weapons if they are out in the open as they were.

I dont think I would have worried about the poison killing me, the heart attack would have done it.

I have a few knives , all for different uses ,
I always have my Browning 810 on my belt.

However if the story is true other than killing the snake with your knife , not sure what " why you should carry a pocket knife in the country" has to do with it.

I mean there are many reasons to carry a pocket knife in the country but for snake protection? I wouldn't consider that to one of the reasons 'cept maybe kill the snake for identification. And most rattlesnake strike and retract.(they don't latch on).

Now if he had a belt to keep his pants up I'd have recommended the following course of action , immobilize the area and use a belt for a tourniquet (not too tight) to help slow blood flow to the heart , Remove watch , wedding band, etc around affected area that is swelling , loosen shirt if it is long sleeve and has a button, keep the hand that was bitten lower than the heart, and keep it still from movement, and seek medical treatment.

When I was living out west I always went hiking with a walking stick I kept out in front of me , and an old Ruger Bearcat loaded with Rat shot.

I was less afraid of the gentleman rattlesnake than those darn coral snakes, (though the rattlesnake is probably more venomous) but because not many hospitals have the anti-venom on hand anymore.

and those translucent scorpions (don't like what is hard to see). When I was living out west I tried never to stick my hand under or over top af any rocks etc.. If I couldn't see where I was placing 'em. Scorpions just freak me out.

I have NO idea where I picked up what I am about to say.... :D

But if a snake bites you in the hand or in not very thick flesh, push the fangs on through. Then milk the snake. :confused2::drool::eek: A large snake has lots of poison and if they pump all of it in then you are history. Snakes usually do not use up all of their venom in one strike.

My only guess as to where I got the "push it through" idea is from one of the US military survival guides I have read.

Does this ring a bell for anyone else?

what you may be remembering is this -

How to Remove a Non-venomous Snake That Hangs On After Striking

Remember that all snakes have teeth that point backwards, into their mouth. To remove a tenacious snake, grasp it with thumb and forefinger behind its head and press fingers together gently. This should open the snake痴 mouth a bit. Push the head forward, towards the bite, to dislodge the teeth. Get the teeth of the upper jaw out and then it will be easier to remove the lower jaw from the bitten area.

Venomous snakes usually strike and let go, and if you are bitten by a venomous snake, you have a much more serious problems than dislodging a snake from your body.

I had an Irish setter one time and she was running out in the pasture and came home and her nose was the size of a football...she could hardly breathe ..I rushed her to the Vet...and he gave her a shot and said she had been bitten by a highland Mocassin...and she would be fine..The Vet further said ...that bite woud have killed a human because of fear..we would have been scared and caused our hearts to pump faster and he assured me the same bite on a human would have meant death. I guess based on this if you get bit...get a tounaquet on it and try hard to remain calm and hurry to a hospital.

I started carrying a pocket knife when I was in Cub Scouts (about 8 years old) and have always had one on me ever since. I have my daily carry pocket knife ( a nice little two blade multi-colored wood handle with brass trim ), my single blade Swiss Army florist knife for out in the yard, my little silver pocket knife that I carry to weddings and funerals (it has our wedding anniversary date engraved in it), my Boy Scout fishing knife... heck I even have a Nixon/Agnew pocket knife, but no politics on TBN!

I have to remember to leave them home when I go to the courthouse to pay taxes or parking tickets. :confused2:

I'd like to see anyone other than Jimmy Durante put a tourniquet on his nose!

I got my first pocket knife when I was 5 or 6. Cut myself soon there after on what I think is called a milk plant. Big leafy plant that when cut oozes white stuff. I cut the plant, the blade slipped and cut me. Ran into the house, cleaned up the cut and asked mom real quiet for a band aide. :D Did not want to have the knife taken from em.

My oldest just got a pocket knife at 10. And already got cut. :D

Now the youngest wants one.

Sad thing now a days is the safety conversation is not just about cutting yourself or others but DO NOT take the knife to school. Cutting yourself would be less painful.

In the Spring Time one really should have a Pocket Knife!

When in trouble a sapling can be cut. A whistle can be made and help can be summoned!:D
