I am going to change the oil in my BX1500 this weekend and noticed that a lot of folks here are using synthetic engine oil. My local Wally has Rotella synthetic that's pretty inexpensive. My question is does the synthetic oil have to have a special rating? My owners manual says to use 10W30 or 10W40 with a CD, CE, or CF rating.

Please advise on what I should purchase, I know someone will have the answer.

It should be oil for diesel application.

WalMart has Rotella T full synthetic, dark blue jug. $19.50 I am not sure if they have other diesel rated oils in synthetic or not. They have lots of dino choices for the diesel application. Reminder: your manual is referencing oil ratings from a few years back. Manuals go out of date.

So, are you saying that i can us the Rotella T full synthetic (blue jug) in my BX1500?

I'll suggest that you look at the API Oil Ratings. The CD, CE, and CF are old ratings and you may not even be able to find them anymore, but the newer ratings, such as CI-4, CH-4, etc. are "backwards compatible" so they're good for you engine. You can just almost say that if the first letter is a "C" it's OK for your engine.

Yes, you can use this 5w-40 synthetic oil in your Kubota. I use 5w-40 synthetic oil in ALL my engines.

I have gone with this T6 line of their for all gas and diesel engines that I have around the place that I change myself just to keep it simple and because I want them to start at Zero of I so decide. :D

The tractors and motorhome will get changed annually in most cases. The 429 dump truck I expect will be about every three years. It cost more but unlike fleet use we do not need much.

If you wish to use 10w-30, Rotella makes a Silver jug, semi-synthetic for around $15 or $16. The choice is yours. Just answering your question about easy, local availability.

I saw that Silver jug for the first time the other day. I am not sure the 5W-40 is worth the extra $1 per quart but I like the lower and higher weights for our use. The 1976 MF has less than 1300 hours on it but the other engines have lived a full life.:D

Perspective; it's a funny thing. I bought one of each. A jug of 5w-40 full synthetic and a silver jug of the semi-synthetic 10w-30, but only saved like $4. I thought the full synthetic was the better buy. :D

Them specs are mostly long gone and good ridings,HDEOs of today(CI-4,CJ-4) is leaps and bounds and better all away around from anti wear additives to cleaning detergents to soot handling dispersant's, Like the others said it'll work with no worries.

pick a HDEO 10w30 to 15w40 and go with it.

Both rotella T5 and T6 are great synthetics

T5 is a 10w-30 Semi-synthetic it is a group 3, group 2+, with a small slug of POA Group 5 esters in it, it is an excellent oil you will be pleased with

T6 is a 5w-40 Full synthetic that is group 3, with a decent slug of the POA esters (group 5) in it, more so than the T5.

With either of these oils youll be very pleased in my opinion Rotella is one of the best oils on the market out there for diesels........

Gas engines with non roller tappets like the zinc I understand too.

yes I run hdeo in both my Jeep inline 6 and Mopar Slant 6, both of which are flat Tappet motors. The problems with flat tappets and zinc (zddp) is more overblown than it really is. The problem has been with flat tappet motors with big cams and high pressures. But obviously there is a lot more shear in a motor like this so A higher shear stable oil (HDEO) is highly recomended......

Valvoline SynPower 10W-30 is CF rated....fully synthetic and sold at Walmart.

EXACTLY what the manual calls for!!

here are some oil VOA's (virgin oil analysis)
NOT ALL 10w-30's are created equal
The first column is the valvoline synpower 10w-30 this is a regular car oil rather than a heavy duty engine oil (HDEO)
The second column is Rotella t5 (10w-30 synthetic-blend), notice the difference in zddp (zinc and phosphorous) this is for high contact pressures (high shear loading) ie flat tappets and diesels this is the number important to you, also note calcium this is a detergent, this is what most oils use to clean and keep your motor clean. And lastly look at tbn (total base number), this is the oils holding ability to maintain its additive pack over a period of time, higher tbn is a higher ability to withstand extended drains.
The last oil is rotella t 5w-40 this is the full synthetic so as you can see there is a big difference between the hdeo and the standards, most cars today do not require the hdeo, but alas our diesels as well as flat tappet motors can benefit from the added protection of the hdeo.... I can posted other VOA's if anyone has a request............

as you can see the tdt is kind of weak in terms of a hdeo, the mobil 0w-40 stcks up closely with it for just a gas oil the 0w-40 is an excellent oil. But in my opinion neither are that ideal for a hdeo use. The valvoline extreme blue does have a better ad pack with similar values but a much better tbn. For the mobil diehards out there, the 15-50 is much more robust as well as the delvac 1 oil series (mobil Delvac 1, synthetic hdeo)

Look at rotella t6 stacked up against any of the others review its just hard to beat it, its a great oil at a good price, there are many good hdeo out there though, chevron makes excellent (dello) delvac mobil amsoils hdd 5w-30 is great.....

Thanks for the info, grandv8...I'll try to digest some of it.
