I ran across this visitor today while mowing my yard. I killed him. Yes I know that was the wrong thing to do, he eats unwanted rodents, he is just one of God's creatures, etc. However, my wife is terrified of these things. If she had come across him, she would not have gone back into the yard until winter. I won't even tell her of the incident.

Anyway, I am wondering if anyone can adentify what type snake he is. Any guesses?

That's one I have not seen before. Without getting a good visual of the head, a lot of snakes look similar. My guess is a fox snake or some kind of either king snake or milk snake.

Looks to be what "was" a Pine snake, we have them here in NE Ga, as well,
very Territorial snake and can be aggressive if cross paths, although not poisonous, I have one lives around my barn, I get a glimpse of him every now-n-then,

I agree with the agressive part. When I got off my lawn tractor to check him out, he was sitting very still. I kicked at his tail to get a reaction, and he bowed up at me real fast. Looked like he wanted a fight. The shovel won the battle however.

Personally I would much rather have that snake than the 40 or so mice/rats it probably took out a year.

You're right! they can eat down the mice population very quickly , this guy who lives in my barn leaves snake poop everywhere, My 4 dachshunds smell him down there but can never locate him, He hangs around in the rafters all day to stay away from them and comes down at night,

the Pic wasnt clear enough to me to see what it was. Last year I mowed over two very good sized "corn snakes" as we refer to them some call em milk snakes too. anyhow the mice population this year is crazy bad all around the barn (where I ran the snakes over by accident with the mower" I also have several good sized garner snakes that I will move out of the way often they like to sun bath out where I mow lol... Anyhow Snakes dont bother me but mice will eat though tractor, car & barn wires. Snakes wont hurt ANYTHING you own unless you consider mice, toads, snails/slugs & grass hoppers your property! LOL. while there are some toothy snakes very few are actually going to bite you unless scared accidentally...

I have had a black rat snake eat a small chicken and they like the eggs too. I usually just relocate them.
