sound when clutch operated under load

/ sound when clutch operated under load #11
I put a few more hours on the 20 today. There is absolutely a "rattley" noise when the clutch is released (off the pedal, trans turning). It sounds alot like gasoline engine detonation, or marbles in an empty soup can. It comes from the trans area, or at least from under the seat. The noise is there whenever the clutch is released, whether it's in neutral or in gear and motoring. Engaging / disengaging the PTO makes no difference it's always there. I took a video with audio but unfortuately I won't be able to upload it until Tuesday when I'm back at work. Besides that, there are all kinds of other strange sounds going on. When the diff lock releases it makes all kinds of racket. I've also noticed the "clicketyclack" noise when I near stall the thing on the bucket then release the "pressure" with the clutch. I first thought it was just the box scraper bouncing around on the 3pt, but it's not. It's a crunchy, "rattley" noise from under the seat. I'll be asking the dealer about this stuff on Tuesday, but with the 4 year warranty I'm not all that concerned at the moment. If I'm going to break it, I'll be doing that shortly. I bought this little rig to do some work and in the first 4 hours I'm quickly learning how to put the screws to it! Look for my upload on Tuesday. I'm curious to hear if the rest of you have the same thing going on (like it's normal).

I should check to see if it only happens in fwd. I was using the tractor for about 6 hours today and heard it numerous times but can't remember if I was in 2x4 when I heard it.

Yep, that's the sound. I checked the PTO this weekend and the sound has nothing to do with it. That rattly sound was there right from the first so I assume its a normal noise. It only happens when I put it in neutral tho. It's getting a little quieter now. I'm not too worried about the sound it makes when under load.

I haven't a bunch of other noises tho.

My ck20 makes the same noise when I'm pushing something that doesn't want to be pushed, I hear the sound when I stop pushing and depress the clutch to put it in reverse. It has done this since it was new and I just assumed it is a torque compensator or some kind of drivetrain protection.

I will sometimes hear a "POP" when I press the clutch while the tractor has a load on it such as when the box blade begins to load up. Not a "rattle" but a "POP" as the clutches releases.

I'm thinking it may be the diff? When I use the diff lock to push the bucket real hard, then back up, it's a very similar (or the same) sound when the lock disengages. Anyone know how this selectable locker works? Is it truely an open diff when disengaged? My old Chevrolet has what's called a "gov-lock" in the Corporate 14 bolt rear. Under load it will automatically lock. If the wheels spin faster than 15 mph, or if the load goes away, it unlocks and makes a very similar "crunch".

Here's the short video clip of the clutch sound. You'll need Apple Quicktime to view it.

Is it truely an open diff when disengaged? QUOTE]

It is definitely an open diff otherwise they wouldn't have a diff lock.

I couldn't listen to the video unfortunately but from the way you described it, it sounds like the same occurance. I'm not worried about it anymore as i'm sure it just the sound of the gears releasing the force the load has build up in the gear train. I'm learning how to avoid loading the sys up so much.

There was a discussion about this before.

The noise you hear has been deemed normal, however what you are going to cause it sounds a little different. I can get the "marbles in a can" noise by pressing my clutch when I'm running the snowblower on my PTO.

The suggestion was you don't need to put in your clutch to disengage your PTO, just to engage something. If you put in the clutch, it "overruns" as I believe it's called, and hence the noise. It doesn't appear to be anything that damages it, but if you want to avoid it, just pull the PTO lever to neutral without the clutch.

This may not be exactly what you are doing, but the noise you describe is the same one.

Enjoy -

The "marbles in a can" sound is pretty accurate for the PTO sound. I think next weekend I'll play around with the PTO. I've never even moved the control.

If you can watch the video I posted, the noise persists with the PTO engaged or disengaged and only clatters when the clutch is engaged (foot off the pedal). I've now noticed that the sound is worse when I'm in reverse and turning the wheels to the right (turning around). It is the exact sound you hear when you push real hard then release the clutch.
