Thanks to you too. I learned a lot about my tractor, looking up things for you to look at. Hope I don't have to go after the rear PTO switch, but will have a leg up on it if it comes to be, thanks to you and several others adding to this thread. :D

Turned out to be the rear PTO switch. Mechanic said it was a bear to get to...had to pull one of the rear tires and the fender to get to it.

Yeah, it's kind of tight in there.

Did he actually replace the switch? I would have expected a bad wire
or dirty connector, or the failure of the PTO to fully disengage.

Having same issue with my JD 4400 HST not starting . If i press the HST forward or reverse pedals numerous times it will eventually start.I thought it was the safety switch on the seat but i jumpered it to no avail. When i turn the ignition it just clicks. It sounds like our starting problems are similar.

Look for a "neutral" safety switch below your HST pedals or the linkage below. If the seat switch was the problem, your 4400 wouldn't start by "jiggling" the pedals.

Fellow Gamecock! I have a JD 4400. It wouldn't start so I jumped it with my car battery. It cranked right up and ran great until I engaged the PTO on the belly mower and it shut down. Battery was dead again. Put in a new battery. Wouldn't start until I jumped it. Ran great. Shut down when PTO engaged. Replaced alternator. Jumped it and ran great. Belly mower worked. When I turned it off, it wouldn't crank again - battery dead. While it was running, I measured 12.8 volts across battery terminals. Could there be a short that is draining the batery that quick?

There is a relay test procedure, and I suspect it applies to the relays in the fuse and relay load center. The relay is K2 that is the starter relay.

Thanks Everyone!
So I went to my starter relay after the girl had been sitting for months with a lit dashboard and nothing when I turned the key.
Figuring a safety switch I started testing them.
To get the the toughest one behind the fender. Here's a tip.
It is on the left side. I never removed the sensor, but I was able to bypass it for a test.
You'll see the principal wiring harness heading toward the back kinda deep. You'll see the two leads leaving the harness in the area above the axle and a connector. But, your are looking and accessing the area from above.
I was able to fish my skinny hand down and get the connector off. From the front in the end, but it can be felt from the front or the back.
End the end- that was not the problem. I had also tested the one for the PTO and seat switch.

Per so many Relay suggestions I went to the panel.
Pulled the K2 relay, it looked dirty.
Plugged it back in and repeated.
SOLVED. It was just a little corrosion on the relay. After months of sitting she kicked right over.

Now I've got a new problem. Rat chewed one of the small fuel lines. I'll post that somewhere else.
