disposal of tree limbs

Not sure why the rental place would say you waited too long -- I chip cedar slash that was cut over five years ago -- the stuff just wont rot naturally! I also prefer to have the "green gone" when chipping for garden etc. If I am just going to dump it I chip or shred when cut. I used to burn a lot more but I am slowing down now that it is mostly chippable or firewood rather than construction and demolition leftover.

Putting tree limbs in a dumpster is not allowed in IL. We can't send "yard waste" to the landfill. Find someone with a fireplace to take the big stuff and chip the rest.....or just wait and burn in in the fall.

I've got a chipper but still burn when there are large diseased trees and conditions are right. Burning takes some time and planning, but is still the best way to go if it is legal. IMO It also make a great occassion for family bonfires.

Well if you have the land you can divvy them up into smaller piles over stumps and logs. That way you provide habitat for the lower mammals that will work its way of the food chain.

Years ago I learned my lesson to burn as you go or pretty soon you have a pile the size of a 2 car garage...now what are you going to do?

Exactly the problem I have. Except, I didn't make the pile, it came with the property.

Current plan is once I get my grapple done, to move the pile to somewhere out of the way and cut/crush it as much as I can with the grapple.

On a positive note, the leaves have made some NICE compost at the bottom of it.

I think the guy at the rental place has been sniffing too much exhaust fumes about waiting too long. :( I chip green or really dry stuff all of the time. If I have the time to cut it up 2" and larger branches make great firewood. Granted dry wood can be harder to chip. Advantage of dried stuff the leaves or needles aren't as likely to clog up the chipper. The biggest worry I have about branch piles is people dragging rocks or metal into the chipper. That is very hard on the knives. If there is any rock or metal debris in a pile I won't chip it up.
There might be a burn ban on large burn piles. I don't think they have a ban against a "barbecue" with weenies and marshmallows sitting close by.:confused2:
If you can wait until October then toss a match in and sit back. You might have to have running water close by if some fire departments require that.

If you live near the woods just drag it there and make piles for the wildlife. It will offer them protection and slowly decompose to regenerate the woods.

A win - win for all concerned.

Here's my pile of tree debris that needs disposing. I'm just waiting for a convenient and safe time to burn it.

October will be here in no time. I'd just wait to burn your stuff unless the pile is in the way and preventing you from doing something you need to do.

Looks like a weanie roast waiting to happen. Good times if you ask me!

While I can't attest to it, I have a customer that said he took it to a local mulch yard that he "traded" his load of stuff to the mulch yard for a discount on buying mulch.....

now he is the kinda guy that has seen everything, done everything, and lived to tell about the class 9 white water rapids he went down in an 8 foot inflatable kayak.... but every now and then he does tell the truth.. maybe work a call!

I had some stumps I took to to the landfill in SC for a co-worker and they made mulch... so there could be some truth here....

In Spartanburg county SC-- dropping this stuff at the landfill is free for residents... It may be all of SC..

they even give mulch out for free.... but I hear it could be almost anything in that mix-- diseased trees etc...

anyway--- that's my story!

It rained here today so I burned. Got about 3/4 done. There calling for more rain so I should be able to get it done this weekend. If not I"ll be hauling to the dump. Saved on the two days of renting a chipper.
