I call in the artillery on ANY snake! There is NO such thing as a "nice" snake unless it's headless and bleeding profusely. Yeah, I have a snake phobia. I scream like a little girl if I step on a stick in the yard! Go ahead and have your fun at my expense. :D

Read about your blacksnake in the wood pile. Well, I was picking up plastic bottles from our fields (we have flood irrigation and get all sorts of rubbish coming in with the water). Some time later, having carried this rubbish all the way across the farm, I saw one bottle had a black widow spider on it. :(

Took a photo and, stupidly, put the bottle on a pile of bricks to show my wife.

The pile of bricks became the spider's new home - so when building our small barn we had to take SERIOUS care when picking up bricks.

Apart from the black widow spiders, wolf spiders, tarantulas, rattlesnakes (cascabel), tax inspectors and coral snakes, the wild life here on our farm is pretty harmless. :)

I don't like those either!

Dang.I'd be doing the 3 slap shuffle on myself..snakes are good if we have distance between us. ;)

Thomas - That maneuver is reserved for yellow jackets  After that comes shirt ripping.
Dave.

Down here in WNC where we live they are building a new bridge over the "creek" it is replaceing the CCC bridge from the late 20's...
the other day I went down there and there were 2 guys still there from the construction company. we struck up a conversation and for 20 min we spotted and tossed rocks at 6 or so copperheads at the water about 20 feet below us.

I would love to take a couple decent sized black snakes and toss in there and watch what happens...

on the other hand I have heard some stories of black snakes and copperheads intermingling....
But I don't know, maybe it is a water snake and not a black snake...

Later,
J

Thomas, I did have a little jump up in the air and a "golly gee" when I moved the 1st board and saw a little slithering action. Than I was OK and proceed to ID the critter, and then it was working carefully to remove the lumber.

mustangesallysdad: Everyone is allowed one (or two) big phobias. As long as everyone in a group is different it all works. I run if there are bees, others run if there are snakes.

Dave and Thomas, back in the thread on trapping yellow jackets I posted my encounter with a nest (and the resultant 25-ish stings). That was pretty much a worst case encounter for me.

Dave, my brother is Maine Guide and gets hired to run canoe trips. All over Maine, the Rio Grand, the Colorado, and up into Labrador and Baffin Island. Civilization gives him the hives. Winters he is in charge of grooming ski slopes and making snow. He gets to work and maintain some pretty amazing equipment. I'll have to get some picture from him of the "tractor" that they use to groom the slopes.
My sister is in southern Maine. She home schools here kids (she's got a PHD in education and is a teacher). She has MS so that's kinda limited what all she can do. I guess we both have PHDs. Mine's in the shed and her's in in the head .

I've seen my share of black widows. And brown recluses. I have a number of activities I'll only do in the winter time because of them (well, and the bees too ).

That's cool. Maine Guides are interesting people. It goes back to the times when 'sports' as they were known, came to Maine for hunting and fishing in the North Woods. I am guessing beginning circa 1850 or so. Now they have all manner of certifications for different outdoor pursuits.

Sorry your Sis has MS. That's tough to deal with.
Dave.

Finally, he was down to hiding under a single 4x4. With that removed, he was out in the open. What a beauty! I've seen two other big black snakes when mowing. I like then because they don't like copperheads any more than I do.

Just wanted to post a little slice of life in North Carolina for everyone to enjoy.

Pete

What you have here is a Blue Racer! Pretty - looks like its starting to shed. You will notice the belly has a blue shade not white. If the belly were white it would be of the Black Rat variety. which is what is posted in the second post.
