could somebody please explain the term "number than a pounded thumb"

Usually goes numb permanently after hitting it two or three times real good. Kinda turns to mush if repeated often enough.

I crushed a finger a few weeks ago and he only thing that hurt that day was when the doctor used a syringe to anaesthetize my finger before putting it back together!

I was doing a brick walkway last weekend and pounded my thumb 3 times with the mallet! Then again I'm Polish and learn slowly!

smashed my index finger between the ratchet handle and the end of a bolt. Of all the pieces of metal on a ford 800, what are the odds that the 5/16" end of a bolt will hit squarely in the center of a fingernail? Hurt like mad for a while, but there is a certain numbness to it right now.
