Re: Bluegrass, Finger Lickin\' Good! The Top 10 Best?

Hakim, Boman, Fivestring, and others,
One of my all time favorite bunch of bluegrass "entertainers" is the Lewis Family. Even if someone doesn't like bluegrass, this bunch from Lincolnton, GA will leave you smilin'.

Pop Lewis died on Tuesday at the age of 98. He still traveled almost full time until about two years ago and still did a couple special shows a year until the end. His wife of 77 years passed away last year, and I remember her traveling along to the shows until a year or so before she died.

Great bunch of down to earth people! To quote a song Pop sang, he's now in a place "where we'll never grow old."

I see the Lewis Family a couple of times a year at the Bluegrass Festivals.
A lot of the old-time originals are gone now. There are only a few left: /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Ralph Stanley
Mac Wiseman
Earl Scruggs
Jimmy Martin
and a couple of others.
This is from a write-up in High Lonesome Strings:

Born September 22, 1905, in Pickens, SC, Pop was one of ten children. His family moved to Lincolnton, GA, when he was only five years old. On October 25, 1925, Pop (who was "Roy" then) eloped with Mom (who was Pauline Holloway). They had eight children, seven of whom survive them. After 77 years of marriage, Pop lost his wife on February 8, 2003, when Mom Lewis passed away.

Pop was honored during his career with the Lifetime Achievement Award from SGN Scoops magazine and induction into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame. He was the subject of a portrait the Southern Gospel Music Association commissioned in 2001, which featured Pop as the patriarch of four generations of gospel music artists.
Pop and Mom Lewis began a family that has become known worldwide for their bluegrass gospel music during the last 54 years. Pop endeared himself to his many fans with his friendliness, humor, and down-home ways. He is best remembered for the song "Just One Rose Will Do." Pop made only a few special appearances during the last two years as he battled health problems, but his heart was with his family as they traveled to sing. Please remember the Lewis Family in your prayers during this time of loss. </font>

If you really want to try something a bit different, try this group Hackensaw Boys .

They're an acoustic, bluegrass-based group with a twist. Think of their style as bluegrass on steroids!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif A very high energy group of musicians who love to play and sing. The best way to enjoys these guys is to see them in concert. It is hard to sit down while your listening. Your feets and hands are just amovin'!!!!

For the bluegrass purist, they may be a bit much.

Enjoy,

Terry

Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Doc Watson and the Del McCoury Band (local boys there)...all great blue grass!! Allison Crouse too...what a lovely voice! (and, yep, her back up Union Station (Is that right?) works great too!
I haven't read the full thread (so this might be a repeat), but Bill Emerson plays outstanding Blue Grass banjo...so, there's another.

Another one..not exactly Bluegrass, is Pete Seeger. Mostly folk there and did a lot of the songs the others have done since. His politics are not so hot, but he has a h3ll of a voice...and his banjo pickin' is first rate!

Hot Rize
Tim Obrien
Flatt and Scruggs
Steve Martin

Saw Allison Krause a year ago, on the "Raining Sand" tour. AWESOME! Her and Plant were great. Not sure what happened though; they were suppossedly working =on a new CD and tour but she pulled out or was delayed.

Another one who can really sing, is Patty Loveless. Seen her on video(PBS I think...) singing bluegrass.

Was'nt Hot Rize the group that Charles Sawtelle played with before his illness/subsequent death?
