I agree with you 100 %,the country today sounds like' pop
music(tries to),when it comes to country,I would rather listen to Johny Cash, Conway/Loretta,George Jones,Connie Smith/Tammy Wynette,Cal Smith/Bill Anderson?Charley Pride/Porter Wagonner/Mel Tillis the 60's and the 70's country music/. The Eagles from the 70's sound like what they are calling country today. Some of the country music today is just 70's pop redone, the music is not near as strong today as it was in the 60's and 70's,country or pop either one.

Doc Watson is more blues/folk. I like that, too. If folks like that style (less banjo), check out Mike Cross.

Patty Loveless put out a bluegrass cd a couple of years ago -- Mountain Soul. It is good and is in my library.
www.ibluegrass.com is a good starting point for bluegrass information. You can join it for free. I like "free".
Some artists that got there start in bluegrass --
Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Marty Rabun, Jeannie Kendall, Travis Tritt, Marty Stuart & Patty Loveless.
Ricky is back to full-time bluegrass. Marty Rabun (of the group Shenandoah) is now back. Vince wants to do a bluegrass cd. Jeannie Kendall (of the Kendalls with her father Royce) just released a bluegrass/country cd. and Patty already did a bluegrass cd. Travis and Marty play all the bluegrass they can.

It is a shame that country music strayed into pop (Twain, Brooks, and 4000 other artists) but if you listen to some of the artists' music, you will again hear banjos and mandolins.

Heck, Rod Stewart plays a 6 string banjo now!!!

Say countryboy, I guess the reason we agree on what happened to country music, is because I came from Marietta, Ohio, just across the river from W.Va. I'm a true mountain william, that's a high grade hillbilly. I took my wife back to where I was raised and I said we lived in this valley. She said that is not a valley, thats a crack. She came from flat land. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dick,
I've been across that bridge so many times I lost count, but everytime I cross it, I always have to look at the river. It used to be so nasty but the last 5-7 years, it has really gotten better.
Did you ever hear of the Mothman?

Dick--

That part of the country surely can put bluegrass in the blood. I grew up in St. Clairsville, and until a month or so before I was born my family lived in Prenter, a coal camp SW of Charleston, in a "crack" where the sun rises at noon and sets at 2. Did you grow up listening to bluegrass on WWVA, and especially the Jamboree? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

No I have never heard of Mothman. Who is that, or what is it? I use to swim in that river a lot. And we use to go up stream and take inter tubes and float down it to. You know park a car down at the levee in Marietta, and take a car to where we would start. A lot of fun. We also use to swim over to the island and fool around over there for a while and rest, then swim back. A lot of people have drowned in it though, strong undertoe in it.

Yes when I was young we had a old battery radio, no electricity out there in those days. WWVA, when up to Wheeling once or twice when I got a little older to. Then come Sat. night WSM, those were to good ole days. We got fog back there and it stayed till around noon, of course it still does. You had to hang your head out the window to drive at night in it sometimes.

I'll second the Del McCoury Band. Great sounds -- especially that duet with Steve Austin and Linda Ronstadt! Wow!
