Thanks guys. Are there any safety switches on the dump switch? When it was cranking it was not lurching in any way. My thought was that it probably would show some sign of wanting to move the tires as I cranked, if it was in gear. Do you think I would need to drain the fuel and start with fresh at this point? The clear bowl is the water seperator correct? I can't get the petcock on that to turn. I do not want to break it. But, I can get the one on the filter to turn. Nothing to prime right? Which lever brings the rpm up and should I give it some throttle while cranking. Thanks a ton. I am going to give it another try this afternoon.

The lever immediately to the right of the steering column is the throttle. It is just visible in the right side of your 2nd picture, below one of the spokes of the steering wheel.

Yes, it is a very, very good idea to use fresh fuel. You will have to prime the injectors after, as you will most likely trap air in the fuel system... preventing a full fuel flow to the cylinders (think bleeding the brakes...). Hopefully somebody with more experience on these particular machines can be a bit more helpful.

EDIT: Make sure all three sticks are in neutral: the two on the floor, and the reverser lever on the left of the steering column.

I did not see any mention of glow plugs. I do not know if it has them or not but if it does they need to go thru the warm up sequence in order for it to start. It is going to need some throttle to start.

ok, everything is in neutral and I moved the throttle while cranking. I get some white smoke, but no firing. I think I am going to drain the fuel and put new fuel in. How do I prime the injectors and or the pump. I want to make sure that I get the new fuel in. Here is a pic of the pump. Can someone tell me how to prime it? Thanks.

Also, what does this switch do? And is it safe to spray ether in the intake?

i believe that is the glow plug or preheater grid by the crazy international symbols that it seems are nearly impossible to figure out! is the tractor a loader with 3pt or loader backhoe, just curious doesnt realy change the starting procedure

not if you use the glowplugs. Look at the engine and see if there are 4 wires attached to the head, one for each cylinder, just like the fuel lines for the injectors, one for each cylinder coming from the pump.

at least that's what I've always been told, glowplugs = no starting fluid. use one or the other.

More posts by folks that don't know as much about that tractor as you do.

The thermostart unit (an intake manifold heater, not glowplugs) is controlled by the key switch. You can unplug the wire to the thermostart unit (front inside surface of the intake manifold) if you wish to give it a sniff of ether.

There is a bleed screw on top of the fuel filter head, probably a 9/16" hex. Another bleeder on the injection pump, 5/16" hex on the main body of the pump, just about dead canter of your latest photo.

The operating lever on the top front of the pump is the fuel shutoff. make sure it is fully forward in the 'run' position. If you do drain the fuel, change the filter. The fuel filter is a very common CAV filter sold by just about anyonr that sells filters.

The engine has to turn over with pretty good speed to fire.

cracking one of the injector lines will tell you if fuel is actually getting to an injector. You could have an fuel line airlock preventing fuel delivery.

The tractor has a 3 pt hitch.

That switch by the throttle, it won't stay in the flipped position. If I rock the switch, it just rocks back, it won't lock. Do you think that that is for glow plugs? I wasn't even sure if it has glow plugs. My truck does and I know not to touch ether. But, I have heard that that can work well with diesels without the glow plugs. I will check the wires going to each cylinder, but does anyone know if it is a glow plug motor?
But, it sounds like it uses a grid heater turned on by the key.
I am not sure if I am getting it to spin fast enough. I think I am going to get a solenoid, drain the fuel and take a video of it spinning. Then you can let me know if it is cranking fast enough. It certainly is not spinning as fast as my 7.3 powerstroke.
I also just want to say thanks to everyone helping with this.
