Shortened ROPS - WHY???

   / Shortened ROPS - WHY??? #41
actually, it's probably quite a bit of an extra cost. 7' doors are/were the standard, mainly because an 8' wall is the standard. if you have a rops that requires more height, you have no choice but to go with a higher door, and that will always require a higher wall. you'll have to go to 10' studs and then cut to the length you want. more expensive studs, more sheathing, more siding, more vapor barrier... basically everything you used will need 10%-25% more material - oh yeah. more labor too.

if you had thought ahead to have higher ceilings, but still used 7' doors, i just gotta ask... what were you thinking? :D

Sure am glad I went with 10' post on The Man Cave. I was thinking clearance for regular vehicles. But, my 9' doors sure make it nice for my ROPS..... Which is folded down right now.

Never heard of 9' studs, Eh?

eh, do be honest, stud length isn't too big of a cost... it's those 9' & 10' sheets of plywood i wasn't able to find.

a couple of years i moved into a house that had your basic stand alone 24x28 2 car garage. the 9x7 doors just weren't much use to me, so i decided to rework things a little. i lifted the entire building up and dropped 3 courses of concrete block and set the 8' walls back down. changed the front from a pair of 9x7 doors to a single 18x8. as long as i don't buy anything bigger, i can get everything i own inside to work on it now. :D

I'm not sure what you are refering to... I'm not the one who has to fold a rops to park a tractor. ( of course I park mine in a place other than my garage.. IE.. a metal barn with motor home clearance PLUS... )

And really.. on a say.. 160K to 200K house.. whats a lil extra garage work cost? 5000$ ?maybee? I spent twice that to have a custom made shower pan that was huge, and a large garden tub with extra jets in it, plus a huge walk in closet, all for the misses..

money spent on things you want/need isn't a waste.. it's an investment.

sorry if quoting you didn't set well, i was just referring to the line about it not costing much more. i took that to mean that you were just thinking about the extra cost for a slightly taller door. i was only pointing out that it means higher walls for most conditions too, so it's a lot more money. yes, it would likely be a few thousand, and if you look at posts in here, you can see a few hundred dollars being a major issue most of the time, and there's a few major issues in pricing debates between some consumer and dealer members currently, so i figured that a few thousand was a little more than minor cost, that's all. i'm glad you are doing well and can afford all the stuff, but you didn't need to drag out a laundry list of big expenses to prove it. there's probably a bunch that would have a minor coronary over a few thousand dollars.

Is there any statistic that shows that 8' garage doors became more popular with the increase in smaller "homeowner" tractors with ROPS?

More than likely its 4x4 pickups and soccer-mom-mobiles causing the door height increase; not us CUT owners.

I think If I was building ( not buying ).. I'd make my garage door rops compatible.. can't add too much to the construction phase.. vs the utility and safety it will offer down the line.

As an architect friend of mine tells me, "Garage space is cheap, kitchens and bathrooms are expensive." So I tend to agree with Soundguy's assertion here.

I highlighted in red the same thing I ask myself what went through the crook's mind who built our house. From floor to bottom of truss in the garage is 11'; yet the schmuck put in 7' high doors to save a buck. I didn't catch it until the house was substantially complete. My F-250 4x4 cleared the open door by about 1" - 2" tops. I always had to fold-unfold the ROPS, and when I went from an umbrella to a canopy that sealed the deal...the doors were going to have to be raised.

My brother-in-law and I put in temporary shoring, cut out the old headers, put in new headers, cut out the siding, and reframed the opening. I had the garage door manufacturer's local dealer put in a new panel, new pulleys and springs for a heavier door. I now have 5-panel 8'-6" high doors, which are great. Total cost of materials and labor was around $3,000 as I recall. My B-I-L makes a living as a "handyman" so this was a paying job for him.

I've had neighbors tell me the doors look more in proportion to the garage now as a result.

You did a far more drastic modification than I did.

My F250 fits in a 6.5' door.

Are there any stock SUV's that don't fit in a 7' door?

My Silverado with simple 31"BFG's is around 6'4". Add any sort of antenna, such as my amateur radio equipment, and it's not even close to fitting at 7'. VERY glad I went 9'.

Can't believe this thread is still rolling.

You get up wrong this am?

If I'm looking at 2 similar tractors and there is a few thousand dollars difference.. that is a big deal.

If I'm building a house and want to park my rops equipped tractor inside.. in the building phase.. it isn't a large expense to plan for it, compaired to the overall cost of the house.. IE.. only a small percentage.

if that small percentage, or total expense is an issue.. then.. don't do it.. park yer tractor outside, under a tarp, in a barn, or get one with folding rops AND don't forget to unfold them.

discussing the price of options needed to build somethinng is quite common here. it's normal every day stuff people talk about... it's about the only way to comapir things anymore when making decisions.. IE.. 'cost'.
