To cab or not to cab?

/ To cab or not to cab? #61
Ha, Ha!

I agreed with Rob-D's reasoning for wanting an open station; I still remember the enjoyment experienced during my misspent youth on two wheels!
However, I ordered a cab on my 'soon-to-be-delivered' (Aug) tractor, because that's what I want.
I know that I'll get my 'out in the air time' tilling, weeding, picking, tying, watering, fence mending, etc. etc. etc., but can't wait to retire the 1020 and move indoors (when possible).
To each his own.

This has gotten as stupid as the hydro guys telling us hydro is the ONLY way to go, or the R4 guys saying that R4 tires are the "best". Listen, we all know what we need and like. Who are you to tell us? Other than when I'm working a field, a cab would be a giant PITA for me. That's the way it is, period. I know a cab is great for many of you. But, some of you need to check your ego and realize that owning an oversized garden tractor on 5 acres doesn't mean you know what everyone else needs. A cab is an option because not everyone wants one.

Did you read my complete post, or just the first part you quoted. We are saying the same freaking thing?

There are people on here who own a 3x20 cab to mow one acre... (sorry buddy) but I think thats crazy. At the smae point, telling a new inexperienced buyer that an open station is the only way to go is misleading.:confused2:

Maybe I don't understand your post? I see you saying that those of us that don't want a cab apparently don't use our tractors much. I assure you, I use mine more than 90% of the people here, for a wide variety of tasks, and have for many many years. I appolgize if I misunderstood.

Yeah, it was early and my logic is fuzzy. What I was meaning to say there is that most people who really work thier tractors have at one time or another thought that a cab would be nice. I put most in there to cover the few hard core people who could never, ever own a cab.

My initial thought of the post was to make light of people arguments...LOL.. as I read it, I can see where i started to get busy and need to end my post and I started ranting mroe than joking....:D

Folks,
The way to decide on whether to buy a cab or open station is to decide what YOU really want. I wouldn't sit there and try to make excuses to myself and others. If you buy what YOU want the chances are you will be happier with the purchase. This is also true when considering the size of tractor too.

I am sorry, its early for me, but I am missing something.... First, it seems most of the open-station folks have a lot of time on their hands because they never have chores to do in poor weather. They all seem to have the time to hang out and do the "stuff" that they "want" to do when its perfect. Also, from the posts above, view their tractor as their outside field motorcycle with 4 wheels:laughing: OK, I went a little far there... but, its your toy.

Now where I get confussed.... The open station guys don't seem to have much "stuff" to do. I am not using the W word yet, that will come later... Plus, when they have to do "stuff", they can do it at any time they would like, or when they "want" to. SO, what the **** do you guys do on these 4 wheeled field motorcycles that never has to be done in any particular time and does not involve dust, bees, pollen, or any other inclimate condition?

Seems to me, you could not till with a rototiller, use a rotary cutter, have a large driveway to plow or pull a drag of any sort. If you own the property to use one of these larger compact tractors, it would seem to me that you would need to complete some of those tasks, and while doing them, there has to be a thought in your head about a cab.

The ONLY way that I can see the point you guys are trying to make is if you own a tractor for nothing else than a 4 wheeled toy, you don't need to get anything done on any particular time frame, and you like to talk about your tractors more than using them.

I say this not to offend, but you guys come in here, some name calling, and tell people no to cabs... But do you really work your tractors, or spend a lot of time on them? Do you do anything that involves having to take a shower each time you get off your tractor due to some sort of dust, dirt, pollen, etc? do you consider that some people work, have families, and have little time to get their jobs complete, plus they have to do them when time is available and cannot pick the perfect time? Seriously, there is a place for both open stationed tractors and cabbed tractors, and it involves many factors. Time is a huge factor! Time behind the wheel and time to do what you want.

I like tractors, but the comparison to a motorcycle (to me) is absurd. Do most people do any sort of work on a motorcycle. No, its purely an enjoyment thing. I can say, in all my years of riding, I never remember being so dirty after a 20 minute ride that I could not go out in public. That can happen on a tractor because your doing work. I did get stung by a few bees.... I have been stung by more on an open station tractor.

My point is, if you don't do much with your tractor and its a toy, save your money, buy an open station. If you work with your tractor (that does not mean its a business. It means that you do dirty thing) and you do not have all the free time in the world, a cab makes more sense. If your buying a tractor large enough for them to offer a cab, I would hope your working it.

I do lots of work with my tractor, bush hogging, snow blowing, clearing, stump removal, etc. There are even times when I'm out in not so good weather. Not very often though and certainly not enough to justify the added expense. And what do I do the majority of the time when I WANT to be in the fresh air? Remove the cab?
Do I enjoy being on my tractor? You bet! Am I doing it professionally? No and no thank you.
So if you're looking down your nose at those of us non-professionals enjoying our tractors because you think we don't accomplish anything with them or justify our need for one you're simply wrong. It's my right arm, it manages my land, my snow and gets me out of jams. What I'm not making money with it? That's because I made money doing other things and I worked hard at them so I could afford my hobbies and the benefit my tractor brings me.
Do I get dirty once and awhile? Sure but I have running hot water here and I imagine if you asked the moto-cross guys if they wanted a cab to stay clean they would probalby say no.

Like many have said here, to each his own. Buy what you want but myself, I have bought more than one tractor and I would know by now if cab was what I wanted. It wasn't.

PS:
I have about 16 acres but picking on guys who buy a 3x20 for a couple of acres is just arrogant! They are accomplishing the things they need to do with their tractors and just because they can afford to do it with more tractor doesn't mean they deserve ridicule. Like me they earned their money and no one has the right to tell someone else how to spend their money.
That's like telling someone who puts in a back yard pool that they don't swim in it enough to justify it. It's not your business, you didn't buy it, they did!
Maybe we should go through your things to see what extravagances you indulge in?

Really, did you read what I wrote or are you just that way?

Again, did you read what I wrote? I said there are people here who own a 3x20 cabbed tractor for ONE acre. I said I think its crazy. Thats it. Just like you are saying getting a cab is NOT for YOU. Why are you jumping all over me for doing the same thing YOU are. expressing an opinion. IF anyone is on their high horse, its YOU.:D

You proably don't know I own a few tractors without cabs.........

I don't mow or do any dirt work in the rain. Nor do I do anything when the ground is muddy.

If it is cold out I put on warm clothes.

If it is hot out I put on my straw hat.

I don't work day in and day out in dusty fields.

I don't have a door high enough for a CAB to fit in.

I navigate trees that a CAB will not fit.

If I spent money on a CAB, I would have had to give up other things... possibly go to a smaller tractor.

I work in an office every day. I am one of those guys that agree with the "get outside and be a part of nature" when I am on my tractor. If we have to explain, you wont understand. Some of us are not professional AG people. Although we have tasks that demand a tractor, our schedule is more flexible and we consider our time on the tractor more enjoyable than work.

Jeeze, just read TBN. 99% of us are giddy withour tractor toys. That alone says most of use aren't in the seat for our "real" job. Were big kids with big Tonka toys.

OK, let's take a look at what you said:

I am sorry, its early for me, but I am missing something.... First, it seems most of the open-station folks have a lot of time on their hands because they never have chores to do in poor weather. They all seem to have the time to hang out and do the "stuff" that they "want" to do when its perfect. Also, from the posts above, view their tractor as their outside field motorcycle with 4 wheels:laughing: OK, I went a little far there... but, its your toy.

No, it's a metaphor and we do work, we just have the luxury of deciding most times when we want to do that work.

No, not true, first tractors do real work, just like motor cycles do real work. There are people who go to work on their motrcycles, use them for economy, second car, etc. Can a motor cycle be someone's fun ride? Yes, but does the motorcycle cop do real work? Yes! Should he get a cab?
It's not that we don't have "stuff" to do it's that we have the luxury when we want to do that "stuff" most times. The few times we have to be out in bad weather is the price we pay for having an open cab we desire the rest of the time.

No, there has to be a thought in your head, not mine. Read above.

The ONLY way that I can see the point you guys are trying to make is if you own a tractor for nothing else than a 4 wheeled toy, you don't need to get anything done on any particular time frame, and you like to talk about your tractors more than using them.

Really? While we can pick most times we want to do things, again, because we worked and earned the money to enable us to have this luxury it doesn't mean we don't do things or that our tractors are just toys. I plow my 600+ foot driveway after a storm because I can. (Real work) If there was an emergency and I had to get out I could bundle up with clothes and do it during the storm. This happens rarely and again it doesn't justify the majority of times I don't want the cab.

No, this your perspective. I said to "each his own". You're the one telling people without cabs that they aren't doing meaningful work and just "playing with 4 wheel toys". We acknowledge the professional who needs a cab.

What? I should get a cab for the few times I might get stung by a bee? I've never been stung in five years, maybe next year I'll get stung I better get a cab?
Sounds like if you don't get dirty, you don't work. I have hot water, I take showers and wash my clothes.
I've loaded hay with people using cabed tractors. They get just as sweaty and dirty but they get to drive back to the barn in AC. I'll pass thanks.

Rubbish!
Just because we enjoy our open tractors doesn't mean we don't do work. It just means for most times we opt to have an open tractor and the expense of a cab is not justified for the few times we would use it. Most of the time we wouldn't use it and those times it would be an encumbrance.

One more time, to each his own.

Rob
