To cab or not to cab?

YESDEAR,
Thats a nice 4720 of your dads! You don't see many with R1s. I plan to add 2 110 wheel weights per wheel to mine. I have not found anyone who has added weights to R1's in that seiries.....

To take it a step further....when you think about it, you dont see many iron weights in any wheels on ANY model tractor here. There seems to be a hang up on fluid filled. Me, you couldnt pay me to load my tires.

I would use liquid ballast too if I could get by with plain water, but since I can't I use iron weights.

My father is leaning more toward weights since they can be removed. He had the tires filled on the 4310 and didn't like the idea of permanent. As far as the stance should I swap the rears right to left? Don't know much about adjusting rim position.

I wouldn't bother with changing the width unless there is some need for it. I would also add that with three weights per rear wheel on my 4520 there has never been a problem with rubbing anything either. While they protrude past the edge of the tires it has been a non issue so far. Having the extra weights is beneficial for traction as should be obvious.

I've had em both and I will never ever drive a tractor with out a cab and air and heat.

Nope, been there done that and a cab is one of the few things that will make your life just that much happier.

Pros and cons:
Cons - cost a lot of money.

Pros:
Bees will not attack you ( I've had that happen )
Dust will not cake in your eyes, nose, mouth, sweat we've all had that.
Keeps you cool in the winter doing snow ( I don't know how some guys get out in a snow storm with no cab.)
Keeps you cool in the summer ( that's a no brainer )
Keeps you dry in the rain.
Keeps the noise down.
Keeps branches from taking out your eye balls.

I could go on and on but I think you get the point.

Ah, the "Ben Franklin" method; compare list of 'pros' vs 'cons'. I don't know about where you live, but where I am about every stinking thing that grows tall around here has some sort of thorns! We have these purple colored stalky things that have the sharpest thorns that hurt like the dickens and itch for days. Heck, I once got slapped in the face with a tall thistle plant when bush hogging on an open station tractor. Dang! Talk about unpleasant!!

nmu98 Thanks. It is a pleasure to run. The R1s were a bit of a slip up when ordering. He wanted the R4s, but now that they are on there I am glad it happened. He wants to either load or get weights. Also to widen the stance. Not sure which is the best way to go yet.

I will be picking up my weights in about 2 weeks and the tractor in about 3. I hope that they do not stick out to far with the R1's. I will take pictures of the install for everyone here with an amount they stick out. Other than the skinny front tire, I think R1's rock!

I would not live anywhere else, but maybe Alaska (but only during the Summer). Went there for our honeymoon. Beautiful place. But I do want to visit everywhere else....one day.

Alaska would be a great place to summer. This may sound odd, but I would like to be there once when all the crab fishing boats leave and come in for king crab season. I would be cool to watch.

I rented a CAT 305.5 CR mini-excavator last Saturday and it came with a cab. No AC, so I had the door and side window open since it was a 90+ degree day. Even with the door and window open, it was so much more pleasant than an open station excavator. No dirt blowing in my face, no wind buffeting, no crud on the drink cup. If the excavator had AC, and CAT offers it for that model, I would have closed the door and window and been a happy camper.

That was a nice machine to operate.

 Thats a sweet machine! What were you doing?

At least in the recent past, fluid was cheaper. I think $$ have a lot to do with how and what people order on thier tractor. Right now, I don't think the price is that different from fluid to weights, so you might see more people adding iron weight. I grew up with iron weight, so............:D

Just now stumbled onto this thread, pretty interesting and funny. It kind of reminds me of the old saying, "Real men don't wear sun glasses, they squint."

I have open station tractors, two with canopies and two with cabs. I will never buy another open station tractor if a cab is an option. I just spent five of the last seven days running a ten foot and six foot bush hog in brush, briers and saplings up to eight foot; used my cabbed tractors. I rarely use my other tractors any more even for light duty. If I want to enjoy the outdoors, which I do often, I hop in my Rhino or on my Grizzly and drive/ride around, often spraying chemicals or working on brush, vines, other projects or just looking around.

A person need not be a sissy to want a cab nor cheap/stupid/inexperienced etc. to want an open station. We want what we want for our own reasons and that should be enough.

Many of us could pay to have our stuff done cheaper than what we spend on our equipment anyway, but what would be the fun of that.

After watching a field demo put on by the local tire dealer with real farm tractors, I'd never even consider fluid. Fluid saps away HP. Yeah, the losses on our sized machines might be marginal, but at the same time, the constant direction changes with a CUT & fluid might make for an interesting study.

Roy, if you can take those purple sticker things in the face and all over your arms without issue, you are a manly man!
