To cab or not to cab?

/ To cab or not to cab? #131
I think it's a bad idea, regardless whether you have a cab or not, to work in any kind of brush without some sort of safety glasses on. I never do.

I live in farm country, farmers have a mix of cabbed and non cabbed tractors here. I'm still looking for the farmer that doesn't sweat and get dirty regardless what they're driving on any particular day. Farming is a dirty, sweaty, stinky job. This is not for me.

If you spend your day plowing 100 acres of corn field than the cab is a nice benefit. That's a business and it's not for me either. This is the last thing I want to do, I find it boring. Clean out barns full of manure, Uck! Gag me with a spoon. You're in and out of the tractor, there is no way around it. Now you're dragging fresh manure into the cab. Simply wonderful, now your cab smells like a barn along with your house! Again, God bless the farmers but I'm not one and never want to be one.

Do I accomplish real work on my tractor, yes, I plow snow, restone my long driveway, plant fruit trees, remove stumps, make trails through the woods, split wood, move heavy stuff, etc, etc. Do I sweat, yes, but I like to sweat and work hard. Do I get dirty, you bet, but so what. I figure if you're going to be outside working on and off your tractor it comes with it.

Now those of you who own cabs, do you ever sweat, have to get out of your cab in the cold, hot or dirt? Has to be it's just a part of working outside.

Rob, you do know if you keep telling us how much you don't like sweaty, sticky, stinking jobs....you will never make it into Roy's Manly Man Club.

Think of all the benefits you're missing out on.!!:D:laughing::laughing::laughing:

I think this thread should morf into the dirtiest job you ever did.

I changed a 4" cast iron sewer line in a hundred year old house for my friend. It was so bad the metal was breaking down and guess what it was all clogged up with? Mike Rowe eat your heart out.

How's that Roy, am I still it the club?

You were never out, Bro...

The Manly Men know who they are...the metrosexuals (mostly HST tractor drivers with cabs) know who they are...no problem.

Hey, Deere didnt give us much choice to at least be 1/2 a man ....I originally wanted the PR tranny in my Cab. BUT having a Cab was non-negoatiable....so I "sucked it up" and got the eHydro. You gear guys have zero clue what your missing out on. I know I was "forced" into the eHydro by virtue of getting the cab, but now that i've used one for an exended period of time I'll never buy another machine without eHydro.
There is NO job that the eHydro doesnt shine in.

So Dave, whats it like to be a metrosexual at home and a real manly man on your family farm?:D

Deere should post a warning label on the cab about what happens to men once they step inside:laughing:

That it is! Seriously, not too many other threads can go 10+ pages with name calling, belittling, finger pointing, and everything else without getting locked. IMO speaks volumes about the caliber of poster here in the JD forums. We may call each other girly men and such, but at the end of the day we are all still friends. Those of us with cabs are "extra friendly"

Its kinda confusing because those machines have cabs too! but no "hydros". My uncle in law has a 7920 with IVT and ILS, IVT functions more like a Hydro then a "Man Transmission" and he's even got suspension AND Air-Ride on it. Next time I see him i'm gonna ask him where he gets his Carhartt work skirts.

Just now stumbled onto this thread, pretty interesting and funny. It kind of reminds me of the old saying, "Real men don't wear sun glasses, they squint."

I have open station tractors, two with canopies and two with cabs. I will never buy another open station tractor if a cab is an option. I just spent five of the last seven days running a ten foot and six foot bush hog in brush, briers and saplings up to eight foot; used my cabbed tractors. I rarely use my other tractors any more even for light duty. If I want to enjoy the outdoors, which I do often, I hop in my Rhino or on my Grizzly and drive/ride around, often spraying chemicals or working on brush, vines, other projects or just looking around.

A person need not be a sissy to want a cab nor cheap/stupid/inexperienced etc. to want an open station. We want what we want for our own reasons and that should be enough.

Many of us could pay to have our stuff done cheaper than what we spend on our equipment anyway, but what would be the fun of that.

One of the best responses I've read. This is a great thread though, fun, entertaining, and from a variety of perspectives. As a tangent question, I have often wondered how much of a pain those cabs like the Curtis brand that folks put on their tractors for winter use are in the summer? Without AC do they open up enough to be cool, and do they really get in the way?
