Lawn Tractor for 1/3rd Acre

I have an X320 and I use it to cut two acres. It's a perfect fit.

For 1/3 of an acre it would be massive overkill I think. It's pretty heavy duty compared to the 100 series tractors.

Although, I used to own a 0.27 acre lot, slightly smaller than yours, and mowing that with a 48 inch deck would have been sweet! It probably would have taken me 30 minutes to do the whole thing. :)

I can't belive people are actually suggesting spending $4000+ on an X320 to mow 1/3 of an acre. Is it even actually 1/3 of an acre of grass or is that the lot size with the house on it too? I have an X320 and mow just under an acre. Even for that, I do more turning than anything. The only reason I went with the 300 series over the 100 series is because we plan on building on 5 acres in the near future and didn't want to have to upgrade in a couple years. I think people's ego is getting in the way of logic. A 100 series lawn mower is WAY more than adequate for mowing 1/3 acre of flat lawn. They are fine mowers and will give many years of service if properly maintained.

+1 on that!

Shoot for 1/3 of an acre, a push mower would do the job...

Its all about what you want, not really what you need,,,he wants a 300 deere, than he should have one,,its nice to be able to afford stuff you don't really need..[I cut over an acre of yard with a 15 year old sears and a 2 year old snapper],now if I could afford it......:D

Thanks again for everyone's input! Just wanted to let everyone know that I went with the JD X300 afterall. I've cut it once so far and I really like it, although the grass isnt growing as fast or as green being that it's August, so I probably wont get a true test for a little while. Even though I'm only cutting 1/3rd acre, it doesn't seem like it's overkill for my yard at all, in fact, its nice to get done with the bulk of the yard so quickly in order to get to the banks and trimming faster. For those of you that suggested using a push or walk behind mower for a lot my size, I did try my Toro walk behind the first mowing and it wasnt too bad. It's a lot nicer however to use the JD and be done in 1/2 the time or less.

I could see myself getting the spreader and cart attachments in the future for various yard projects. Having a house and a yard is definitely a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be! Thanks again.

So how long does it take to do 1/3 of an acre with an X300? Like 20 minutes? :)

Well I have steep banks that stretch the length of the yard on 2 borders, so that adds some time when I have to get out golf cleats and the push mower. Im not exactly sure how long it all takes, but it went a lot faster than just using the push mower for everything! And I can have a cold one while riding!

Would be a great choice for a 20+ year life mower.
If you buy a Homes Depot junker, expect maybe 5 years out if it, and then throw it away. Cheap price=cheap components.
I've always bought quality Deere mowers, and they have all lasted 15 years and still performed like they were brand new yet. I bought one cheapo mower, and it lasted 3 years, and was then taken to the dump, because the whole front end fell off, and the transaxle exploded.

Question: I bought a John Deere Z225 years ago from my local John Deere dealer based on the recommendation of Consumer Reports (this was before I found this forum). My goal was to purchase a mower that met my needs, was a good value, and would last 15-20 years. The mower is always stored in doors and gets all scheduled maintenance done by the dealer.

Home Depot sells the same mower (at least from what I can tell), at the same price.

Is a mower like the Z225 generally considered to be a cheapo mower or a quality mower?

Thanks
