Lawn Tractor for 1/3rd Acre

Unless you're very opposed to walking, I'd suggest, say a smaller commercial walk-behind. The price will be in the ballpark with the x300 series Deere, it probably will outlast the riders of that price range, will deliver a excellent cut with less impact on the yard, and will require less storage space. You could always add jungle wheels/silky to keep from walking. Think about it.

Now that's a good idea.

Since the OP replied to my questions regarding non-mower use; it sounds like a 100-series Big-Box-Mart tractor will serve his needs.

If I could afford the X749 I want, I would sell him my L-130 for $1,000 or less. It has 75-hours on it.

Hello everyone,

I'm very inexperienced in the area of lawn tractors, but I'm moving to a house with 1/3rd acre. The yard is flat and open, seems perfect for a lawn tractor. So far I've looked at John Deere LA series, as well as the X300. I've also looked at the Simplicity Regent. I bought a membership to Consumer Reports and they have the JD X304 and X300 rated near the top, unfortunitely they do not rank Simplicity.

I've had several recommendations for each tractor. Supposedly the LA series was designed for yards like mine, but after reading hundreds of poor reviews, I'm really hesitant to go in that direction. It appears the X300 is a safer bet, but I've read many people who insist you need to buy at least an X320 or higher. As for the Simplicity, I dont care about the lawn striping, and I know just as little about their durability.

Bottom line: I just want a tractor that will cut grass for many years with the least amount of problems on a flat 1/3rd acre. What do you think the best option would be for me given the work the tractor will be called upon for? Thanks for any input!

What are you looking to spend?

I think the X300 is near the max that I really want to go. So ~$3,000.

Take the $3000.00 buy a nice 100 series JD , stihl 45 weed wacker , and a decent push mower ( maybe a Toro or a Honda ) and you will still have some left over for a lawn cart or odd and end implements .

I bought a realy nice Cub Cadet Self Propelled 22" mower about 8 years ago and it runs like a top today. I am not sure your age but if It were me and you ONLY wanted to cut grass get a $700-$800 walk behind and call it a day and you will also stay fit!!!!! OR you can buy a Big Box mower then this winter get wheel weights and a plow and one of those plastic looking cab covers and plow all your nieghbors side walks!!!!!!!
I say get a good walkbehind.
Good Luck and congrats on buying a house.

Thanks for the suggestions! Funny thing is, I already bought a Toro RWD mower and an Echo WW. I'm going to see how far that gets me on the yard without the tractor. I'll probably still get one but I'll try without it at first.

I do have an X300 with 42" deck. I have about 2.5 acres, about 2 of them pasture. It has been a great machine for around the house. It is very reliable.

I have a steeper little slope in one section, and I have to go straight up and down in that area.

Sometimes in very bumpy areas one rear wheel will lose traction, so I just lean in that direction to shift weight onto the drive wheel. Most of my bumps come from gophers.

It could not really keep up with tall weeds and clover in the pasture, so I got the 24hp tractor for that. At first I thought I would sell off the X300, but it's perfect for lawnmowing, better at it than a tractor. It's lighter and more maneuverable. I also attach one of the little HD/HF utility wagons to tow around for projects (string trimmer, chainsaw, etc.) so it functions like a little Gator.

There are two different blade sets, one for mulching and one for the grass catcher. I found a wide disparity in blade prices from one dealer to another.
