I'm afraid Lapp, my neighbor from down the road, has us all beat.

I've wanted to play with charts on the "numbers" program on my MAC so...

For the graphs and averages, I had to kick out 3 replies because they had huge acreages: D7E, Spudland_Dave's family farm, and zythinl. Nothing personal, you guys just are doing it big time and make the graphs look funny.
I had to kick out Edward.S because he has an insane amount of HP (714) on "just" 80 acres (and I think we are all insanely jealous of anyone with that much HP).

The Averages:
Average Acres is 66, Average HP was 116, average HP/Acre was 16.

The enclosed .pdf has two X-Y plots. The X axis looks logarithmic even though it's not. So each bar is a response, and the axis number labels try to fit the range in a very general sense.

The Graphs:
The top chart is acres on the x axis, and total HP on the Y. It's nice to see that people like HP no matter how much land they have . People with _lots_ of land tend to have more tractors and HP. One guy at around 6 acres shows there is no such think as too much HP and should be admired for bucking the trend and standing out in a crowd .

The bottom chart is HP/Acre vs. Acres. There is a somewhat of a trend here. The X axis is acreage, the Y is HP/Acre. So generally speaking, as you get more land your HP/Acre goes down. I had to limit the Y axis to 40 which clipped a few admirable HP loving people off at the knees.

The Conclusion:
So there you go. I'm missing Excel here, the 1st time I've missed a Microsoft produce since jumping ship to the MAC a year ago. You've got averages and plots. The plots are cherry picked data kicking out anything that made the plots not look purty. Something about lies, **** lies, and statistics :confused2:.

My conclusion is there is no such thing as too much HP, too much land, or too much seat time.

Pete

That's way cool... but like eepete and his attempt to eliminate "statistical outliers" - misleading!

You forgot that 17hp Wisconsin engine powering the baler! :D

Nice work Pete!

When you think about it, your absouletly correct in your statement of more land = less HP/Acre. I look at it like this...
There is a basic "minimum" HP and at the same time, the numbers can sorta be deceiving.
If I doubled my acreage to 4.5 acres I would easily keep my existing stable and cut my HP/Acre in half. On the other hand, I couldnt live with less then a 3x20 series machine. I'd have a 3x20 even on 1/2 acre. Thats a personal thing, some people rather watch Football and go to the neighbors for a cookout every saturday. My BIL goes riding his Harley...What do I do on Saturdays? Crank up the ol JD.

Examples...
-a 6 hp Push mower on .5 acre would put a person at 12 hp/acre and what smaller machine could you get? Sissors?

-The difference in HP on Machines we're specifically talking about (Compacts and up to 5x series machines) is really minor. For example, the hp difference between a 2305 and 3520 wouldnt change my HP/Acre ratio all that much, BUT the amount of work a 3520 is way more. Same applies even on larger machines. D7E's 300hp Versy can cover way more then 3 times the acres a 100hp machine can cover. Throw operating costs into the mix like fuel/repairs/etc, it makes that 300hp versy wicked cheap to run.

I think this could lead to a very interesting survey , By adding the value of machinery and seeing what the cost per acre is ?

Nice bar graph Pete! I now sit on 20hp per acre, maybe someday that figure may change to 1hp per acre though.
