Salesman changed sale price!!!!!

/ Salesman changed sale price!!!!! #61
A car salesman and I agreed on wrote down price with handshake for new car for wife. This was after 5 hours of looking at cars and talking about price. I was then escorted into another room where I sat down with the close out guy. He typed out a long sheet with added costs (lot fees, shipping cost, you name it) and the price went up about 2,500.

I told him that's not the price the salesman and I shook hands on. He made his counter argument and I countered. He then said that ALL customers always pay these costs. I said I could care less what any other customer had paid. The salesman and I made a deal! I walked into this room and you changed the deal. Now I don't trust or like you. I do like my salesman though. Guy still didn't budge. I stood up and told the wife, honey we are walking out of here. Guy in the room got angry look on his face, said hold on, spun his chair around, and started typing again. I love it when they try to make YOU the customer feel guilty. hahahaha!

I ended up paying the exact price the salesman and I agreed on. This close out deal lasted for 30 minutes. As I was about to leave the salesman said I was first customer that didn't pay the add on prices and he never saw anyone get this good of a deal. I told him that was untrue because my dad (30 yr business man) never paid add on fees, nor one cent in taxes on any vehicle he purchased. I've watched him do this all my life and he always got the dealer to pay the tax. One car salesman even got fired after selling my dad a car. I wish I had the talent dad has but I don't. I truly believe he could make living buying cars FOR people.

Some people take car shopping personal. It's not. It's just a game about your hard earned money. Play it right and you save a few bucks.

This same situation has not worked for me every time. Some dealers have told me to hit the road and that is OK. I keep shopping dealers until I find one that accepts my terms of business.

Any update on this?
Over the years I have had people try to pull this cr@p on me. When I say something like "Oh. I'm sorry, I must have misuderstood" and start to walk out the door, the deal suddely reappears. A couple times they let me go and called back a day or so later.

Once I was all set on an M9000 Kubota from a dealer that couldn't seem to be bothered by someone who knew what he wanted and was willing to pay that day to get it. Killing time across the road at the Deere dealer I wound up buying a new 5520 with a loader. Glad I did since the Kubota guy went out of biz a few months later. Who would have guessed?

Times are tough in pricing in the small tractor market. No reason to deny an honest price to a quality dealer so he can stay in business to provide service but equally no reason to reward others for bad behavior.

Don't worry about changing your mind with a salesman. Their job is to sell and keep you sold. If they don't, it is their failure. You cannot let a salesman down, either they did their job, or they failed. All of them want your money, one of them will get it. It is your hard earned money. I don't agree with anyone who thinks you owe a salesman anything. There is no deal until it is sold. You owe the business your payment if and when they complete the sale. If large ticket sales was easy it would be self service at WalMart. A good salesman will keep your trust and convince you their deal is the best value. Salesman come and go like the seasons. The old dealers with white haired salesman that have 20 year old plaques on their walls know what they are doing. Hungry car and RV salesmen are floating around like oil in the gulf trying their luck with whatever product they can purvey at the moment. Some will make it. Take your email to the owner, not the salesman and ask him to honor it (if you want it) and then shut up and let him talk. You will learn all you need to know about that dealership in the next 30 seconds when that owner opens his mouth. If the salesman isn't a blood relative he is probably already on the endangered specie list anyway so stick with the owners words.

Attitudes like this is exactly why some of the best dealerships around simply opt to NOT sell to some people. If the customer is dishonest and treats the dealer and salesperson like they are all liars, I'd also tell the customer to go find another dealer because we don't need your type of business.

I expect dealers and salespeople to be honest to me. If they aren't, they won't see me again and in my position, they may have a very difficult time finding another job. I also expect customers to treat salespeople and dealers with respect. If they don't, they are not worth spit. A man is only as good as their word. If you make it a habit of breaking your word, what does that say about you? I always have and always will do business the old fashioned way; truthfully and always staying true to my word.

One thing for sure this post has shown there are two sides to every story

it is also getting harder to keep track of and conserve our hard earned money

the more complex things get the harder it is to conserve our money

I have purchased many new vehicles and only pay cash. Usually I go in during lunch time and tell them I have 15 minutes left after viewing and test driving. I have done my research and know about what I値l pay before entering the dealership. As long as the price is very close the deal will be done quickly and without pain. One of the deals was set at lunch with a verbal agreed upon price and I would come back after work and do the paper work. Upon arriving and starting on the paper work I noticed the price was $10 higher than agreed. The Manager said that was the final price and I said you agreed upon the original price and your willing to loose the sale over $10 and he said this is the price. Fine, I was getting up to leave and the salesman took out his wallet and paid the $10. The deal was done but I never returned to the dealer even for maintenance. I do it this way because I can't stand the cat and mouse game and I know what I'm willing to pay. I don't need to talk about financing, extended warranty, leasing or any other add on's.

Amen, brother. Important negotiating advice here for all.
I do similar and make the entire deal over the phone, based on the assumption the fit and finish of the vehicle are as discussed and the mileage really is 1.2 miles and not 151.2 and that the charges are exactly as agreed upon. If so, deal done. If not, I am outta there.
If more of us behaved this way there would be less attempted trickery around.
You can't beat a dealer down since the lowest price isn't usually the best price, but honesty sure matters.

It has all turned out for the best!:):):)

I bought a Kioti DK35SE Hydro/Cab/Loader on Saturday about 2 hrs from where I live.

The experience was great and the young salesman was honest and straight forward. We agreed on a price over the phone and I went and looked/bought it.

I think I was treated more than fairly and he offered his best price first no haggles. I got it for $26172.69 out the door Cdn. funds.

Because of geographics here most deals are done over the phone or internet for vehicles and tractors.

Regardless of what the people said about my bad experience I still think the first salesman was totally dishonest and I was honest. The people that blamed me was not there and did not read my posts correctly. He lied period so dont even respond if you decide to sling mud at me because you dont know the facts!:confused2::confused2::confused2:

I got some excellent advice from some of you guys and I appreciate that.

Well, we're glad everything worked out to your satisfaction, and we'll take your word that you were were honest, but by the same token, you shouldn't blame others and accuse them of not reading your posts correctly. They took your word then, too, when you posted:

I made a deal with a Mahindra guy on Monday (and) I called the Mahindra guy and told him I was buying the Kioti which did not make him very happy

So by "did not read my posts correctly", what do you mean? How were they supposed to read it?

I bought land in 1990; the asking piece was $105,000. I had a certified check in my hand for $85,000. Take it or leave it.
Remember the "# 1 golden rule", he who has the gold rules.
Rule # 2, refer to rule # 1.

By OP: "I made a deal with a Mahindra guy on Monday (and) I called the Mahindra guy and told him I was buying the Kioti which did not make him very happy"

So by "did not read my posts correctly", what do you mean? How were they supposed to read it?

Since I deal with auto and tractors every day as part of my job, even in this depressed economy, not many dealers are willing to deal with a customer who does what the OP quoted as doing. That's why I said a man is only as good as his word. Dealers do not have time to play games with customers who pull their chain or lie to them. Every dealer in existence will agree that there are some customers they'd pass on every time. Based on the wording of the first post, I'd have told the OP to go buy a kit Jinma and put it together yourself because we don't need your business.

As opposed to what several people here have said, most all tractor dealers are good honest people just out to make a fair living. There are always exceptions to the rule, but that is the norm. Most customers simply want to get the best deal they can. It's the ones who treat salespeople and dealers like dirt who end up having a hard time buying a tractor and an even harder time getting anyone to work on it when it breaks. The old adage of treating people the way you would like to be treated sure rings loudly in this thread.
