I have never sold tractors or farm equipment. But I did sell cars for many years. I never gave a person a written price on any vehicle I had in stock. Here is the reason why. With a printed price you gave your competition an open door to beat your deal. Some dealers were,(are), so hungry they will sell their product at and maybe even under cost. (You never want to have your dealer sell you at below cost because he will go out of business and you need him,) Many buyers never consider what they get after the sale such as service and help solving problems. When they are buying new all they are considering is price for the new vehicle or tractor. I always told the buyer shop around, keep in mind my dealership reputation, years in the business and etc. then bring me your best price I will beat if I can. Folks that might sound crazy but in the 1970痴 I made over $40,000 per year selling. I never low-balled a person, which seems to be what the Koiti dealer did. The Philosophy behind low-balling a price is you go to the Mahindra dealer and tell them they are X dollars too high. They tell you no the price i gave you was really good. Kioto can稚 beat my price for a like equipped tractor. You say well I can beat the price. The when you are told the real price from the Kioti dealer you are shocked and tell the Kioti dealer that is too high, Mahindra said such and such. The Kioto dealer then days I made a mistake and I am sorry but let痴 see what we can do. Believing all the time you will give him a few hundred dollars more than Mahindra because you want to save face. It is not easy to go back to Mahindra and say, 展ell I feel like a fool, I can't get the tractor at X price will you still sell me yours for X?
Folks it is just a game. That is why I got out of the business. I have always said very few dealers tell the truth. Case in point; ask a dealer the best price they will take. If they are honest they will give you their best price from the get go. But few do. Even after they tell you their best price the normally negotiate down some more. If they told you the best price there would be no room to negotiate. Now if you have a trade this is different because no one can put an exact price on a trade-in.

If I were selling tractors in your area, even though you are three hours from me. I would determine how ready you are to buying, and then see if you could buy, (the old would you, could, you and if you sales style without the if you part, by the way is still used today to qualify buyers from lookers.), and then come to you with a model tractor I think you want. I would sell you on my service and willingness to serve you. This would get the deal quicker than being the lowest price. What will it cost me to bring the tractor to you one day? A good dealer always starts out with the list and then say I will do all I can to make you a deal. Let痴 consider what it will cost the dealer/salesman to bring the tractor to you? Let痴 consider you live 150 mile away. I would put one day in @ let痴 say $100.00 per day salary, 150 mikes at $1.50 per mile or $225.00 so I have invested $325.00. If I am not going to make that much or more in parts sales I have a very big hole in my operations. So I have made nothing until I sell you a tractor. Many dealers today only sell price. Where they need to sell product and service. I have a friend who sold Chryslers in the 1970痴. About half of his cars he sold for list price. Why because Mrs. Jones knew if it wouldn稚 start on a cold morning all she needed to do was call the dealership and a person would be at her car in a matter of minutes.

No way would or have I ever bought a new vehicle without a written agreed price. Not going to do that "business manager" thing until the price is set - in writing.

Car dealers sell cars below "cost" every day and make money. I don't feel bad at all about making the best deal, and if that dealership goes under, the other dealers have to honor the warranty, and are happy to - they get paid by the manufacturer. New car dealers make their money on service and used car sales.

Unfortunately I don't believe a dealer can be held to a price until you sign on the dotted line. Salesmen are human and could make a mistake. But its up to the customer to decide whether to do business with that dealership or not.

"Dealer cost" are just two meaningles words. The dealer does not pay "dealer cost". That is the dirty little secret. There are manufacturer hold backs that are paid to the dealer after the sale, and there are periods the dealer has not paid a cent yet. Any dealer will cheerful trot out the invoice to show you. That is just the sticker price he is "supposedly" paid. Bet you he didn't PAY that price. I have had dealers sell me cars below invoice and begged me to do it again. That is because it is not really below their cost, they just let you think that. Always remember. They always say invoice not cost. We do need salesmen as they do provide valuable product information and do help push us when we are stalled in the decision making process. They do assist you in choosing the right rig for you. But they should not be offended when you do your level best to keep as many hard earned dollars in your pocket and out of theirs. That is the thrill of the hunt for them. The old salesman's saying "the sale doesn't begin until the customer says no". A good salesman enjoys the challenge of a difficult close. I got miffed at my local Kioti guy when he was rude to my wife and insulted when we checked around on his price. I had even offered to pay him more than the other guy was asking just to keep the sale local. He later called to try and take my offer, but he couldn't buy his rudeness to my wife back from me. Game over. I did buy the Kioti. I think they are good machines but there are some dopes selling them.

My Grandfather started in the car business back in the 1920's and I grew up working there summers and weekends...

He always had prices on all of his cars... new and used. I still remember putting the wrong price on a very clean used Ford Pickup when I was 12... the price was almost a 1/3 less then it should have been and was meant for the other Ford Truck on the back lot.

A customer walked in about the same time... looked the truck over for a few minutes and said he wanted it...

I proudly brought him into the office and my Grandfather pulled out the paper work and heard my Grandfather say the truck was a "Cream Puff" because it was like new and then he started to write it up... a few moments later he realized the price was wrong and asked me to bring him the sign and I nearly died right there...

I tried to explain what had happened as the customer said he wanted the truck for the price on the window. My Grandfather paused and then apoligized for the confusion, told him he was getting a great truck and sold it for the window price.

Later we talked about it... my Grandfather said honest mistakes do happen and what matters is doing the right thing to correct them...

He explained refusing to sell would have tarnished his reputation at a cost far greater than doing right by the customer.

I guess that's why he always had his home phone and home address on his business card because sales is a business built on trust.

The truck customer came back and bought several more cars over the years and also recommended my grandfather to his friends...

I hear a lot about loyalty... sadly, it really doesn't exist much anymore. For one thing, people just don't stay in one place very long anymore and the relationships often never develop. Grandfather had over 50 years in the business in the same neighborhood.

I witnessed the owner (Doug ***)of the Dodge dealer in Burlington Vermont (Goss) give a 100% refund when one of his longtime customers was declared legally blind a month after buying a new car. He had put a couple hundred miles on it. He said the man and is family did business here as long as I can remember and trusted me with their driving pleasures and problems. This is not the time to let them down. I'll wager he still sells the family all their cars.

I have having to buy vehicles. It's such a "game". Not that everybody is a crook but there sure are some out there.

Can you go back to the Mahindra guy and buy there?

Richard, you made deals on two tractors with two salesmen. Neither had any business knowing the details of the others deal, even if tractors had been identical from different dealers. If you're willing to commit to a deal make it plain to each that you intend to evaluate each dealers price against the features of their tractor to decide which to buy. Neither needs to know anything more about which dealers or tractors are involved. Next step, if you're serious, you should be willing to commit to a date of purchase and if you don't purchase by that date you should consider that you've breached the deal & be willing to renegotiate. Disclosing the other dealers price was your error, intentional or otherwise, however I agree that the Kioti salesman acted poorly. If you managed to force his hand you'd have very likely paid the balance in inconvenience later. MikeD74T

You know reading all of this post is real interesting and really opens your eyes up on the "tractor buying experience." My wife and I have been shopping for our first tractor the past few months. We have been to about half a dozen dealers and most of them acted just like you are describing, and yes some treated my wife like she was not there. But I want to be the one to actually post some encouraging words for people in my shoes.

A few weeks ago my wife and I wandered into a fairly new Kubota dealership in our area. Here we were greeted by a young salesman ( probably only 26 or so). Now being that this is our first tractor we are kinda clueless and told him right upfront. This guy spent over an hour with us. He assessed our tractor needs and explained what features we would benefit from. He then took us outside and had my wife and I drive the machine and she even used the loader in a big pile of mulch! It was actually a fun time. He was polite, very understanding and patient, and my wife was actually getting excited about tractors. It was the first dealership we went to that we truely able to relax and that we were being taken care of. When the time came to discuss price we sat down and he wrote out the price and even some different options to save us some money! He ended by giving my wife a pink Kubota hat! It really felt like he cared about our needs and was genuinely trying to help us. So to any dishearted tractor newbies that are a little intimidated after reading this post know that there are still some good people out there.

If there is any truth to the statement about loyalty being a thing of the past I fault the business as much as the customer. People have always shopped around and they always will.
I am loyal to my banker because she treats my right.
Same with my building material supplier.
Same insurance agent for 20 years. I used to change every 3 years.
Bought 6 of my last 8 vehicles from the same man because he is straight with me. (two $500 Rangers were found elsewhere)
The man who sold me my Kubota will never see me again.
The man who sold me a boat will be the first person I talk to about any marine needs even though he is 4 hours away.
I have customers who I have known for 25 years. In that time I have worked for many different companies. I treat them right.
Loyalty is earned with each encounter. There is no entitlement.
As for price changing. Reneg on a deal or bait and switch, you will never see me again but I will remember your name.
